In memory of my Gt Gt Grandfather:James Tillet PorterNovember 21, 1842 - July 10, 1933
Photo taken at age 19.
Life for James Tillet Porter began on November 11, 1842 in Union County, South Carolina. He was born to John B. Porter and Lucy Bevill Porter. He had three sisters (Ann, Elizabeth, and Paralee) and one brother (John).
When the children were small, their father was shot and killed while plowing the field on March 25, 1850. It was said that he was in a dispute over land lines. (This story is backed up by the Shelby Co. Historical Association).
The mother heard the children screaming and knew what had happened.Tillet and Ann remembered their father, but the other children were to small.
Lucy Bevill Porter later married William Edward Porter, called Ned and Grandpa Ned by his grandchildren. He was a first cousin to her first husband. To this union three children (Jemima, Jerome, and Lucy) were born.
The family moved to Winn Parish in Louisiana and in 1857 lived at a place about two miles south of Winnfield at what was known as “The Foster Field”. It was said that Lucy Porter was such an orderly housekeeper that she could put her hand on anything in her house on the darkest night.
Tillet was a man of small stature with blue eyes and reddish or sandy hair. He never seemed to get angry and even into his final years his disposition was of calm composure. With his jolly, pleasant attitude he was always a joy to his family and friends. His motto, regarding what others did, was always, “If it suits them, it suits me.” He was a good Christian man, who never used foul language. For many years, he wore a long beard and moustache. As he grew older it turned almost white. He smoked a pipe.
Thank you to: Bessie Mae Eagles Wilson, oldest child of Lucy Leona Porter Eagles and James Scarborough Eagles Sr.Thank you to: Andrea Harris, g-granddaughter of Ibzan Porter
It was told by Sarah Jane Durham (daughter of Jamima Porter) that her Uncle Tillot, had a long white beard and he used to sit by the window reading the Bible and chewing tobacco. When he had to spit, he would put his finger in his Bible to hold his place. One time he got mixed up and pointed out the window and spit in his Bible. This story was not to belittle the old man (who may have told the story himself) but it was just a funny family story.

Police Jury Biography
Something About Our Parish Lawmakers
JAMES TILLET PORTER was born in South Carolina Nov. 21, 1842; moved to
Louisiana in 1857, to the vicinity where he now resides. He enlisted in
Company C, 12th La. Infantry and served with that command until the close of
the war, when he came home and commenced farming. He is now serving his
second term as a member of the police jury representing ward one.
Military Records: Old Soldiers' Day, 1900s:
Last Saturday about sixty of the veterans had come for the meeting at 10 o'clock; three signal guns were fired on court square and the members of the camp assembled in the court room to transact the routine business of the day. Hon. J. M. McCain presided in the absence Capt. Com. Geo. A. Kelly. He was assisted by Lieuts. Joe Smith and J. G. Teagle. Fifty-three members were present and answered the roll call. The following officers were chosen for the ensuing year: Capt. Com., J. M. McCain; 1st Lt., Joe Smith; 2nd Lt., J. G. Teagle; 3rd Lt., W. H. Mathews; Adjt., W. L. Smylie; Quarter Master J. E. Rogers; Commissary, R. L. Jackson; Sgt. Major, J. T. Porter; Color Sgt., J. J. Dickerson; Surgeon, Dr. F. M. Smith (probably should be S. M. Smith); Chaplain, J. M. Jackson; Sponsor, Miss Nettie Teagle.
From: September 10, 1931 Winn Parish Enterprise:
Mr. Tillet Porter (James Tillet Porter), who will be 89 years old this November, made his first visit back to the scene of his days in the Civil War, when he visited Vicksburg, Mississippi, last week end. Mr. Porter made the trip to Vicksburg with Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Durham and family and Callie Porter. It required only three days to make the trip there and back and to see all the sites of the surrounding country. Back in 1863 when Mr. Porter made the trip it required a whole week to go. The trip was then made by horseback. The trip last weekend was by motor and was made almost entirely on pavement. Mr. Porter said there were many things that looked natural to him. He recognized the place where the old gun boat sunk. While he was there in 1863, Grand had a canal cut to turn the Mississippi River. Now a large traffic bridge and a railroad bridge span the river. Mr. Porter visited the National Cemetery and a large part of the surrounding country. When he was there 68 years ago he was a member of the 12th Louisiana Regiment. There were 135 men in his company and not one of them is left besides himself as far as he knows. Mr. Porter is still very spry and can see to walk wherever he wants to go.
