Grand Gulf originally was a bustling city.  As late as 1858 it still had
1000 to 1500 inhabitants.  It was slowly eaten away by a fire in 1851
(destroyed much), laid low by a tornado in 1853, yellow fever epidemic in
1855, and in 1858 the Mississippi River ate up 52 blocks.  By 1860 it had
shrunk to 158 people.
It was shelled and burned in the Civil war and Grant tried to land there
4-29-1863 to assault Vicksburg, but failed.
