Descendants of Fritz (Veit) Frederick Zeigler

 

The surname Zeigler appears to be occupational in origin, and is believed  to be associated with the Germans, meaning, "one who built with or made brick or roof tile". Different spellings of the original surname are a common occurrence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spellings variations of Zeigler to be : Seakler, Seigeler, Zeagler, Zeaglar, Zeikler, Ziegler and Zigler.

 

 

Generation No. 1

 

1.  Frederick (Fritz - Veit in German) Zeigler was born in Sohnstetten, Germany in 1695. In about 1719 in Sohnstetten he married Christiana Ruhland who was born about 1698. Fritz died before 1758 in Orangeburgh, SC. Frit (Veit) Frederick Zeigler was member of church in Sohnstetten, Heidenheim District, Wurttembery, Germany in 1725. 

 

 On March 23,  1753 Fritz Seigler with wife and five children arrived on ship Elizabeth from Rotterdam, with his family to settle in this Province (SC). He had a wife and five children. Two of the children were bound out on their arrival in SC; they were thought to be his sons William and Michael. The other children were John George Seigler, age 21, Nicholas, age 16, and Jacob , age 13.

Fritz received a land grant for 250 acres on Mine branch above Amelia Township S.C. in 1754.

It is believed that he had another son Martin Seigler who came to SC with one child, his wife and mother-in-law. Mary Ann Seigler who married Conrad Holman may have been a daughter of Fritz. She was born about 1728 in Germany.

 

 

 

Generation No. 2

 

2.  MICHAEL ZEIGLER Sr. (FRITZ (VEIT) FREDERICK1) was born 1738 in Sohnstetten, Germany, and died April 10, 1809 in Bamberg, SC.  He married (1) MARTHA PIQUOTT abt. 1769  (2) MARY MILDRED CLEMENTS abt. 1798 in Charleston, SC . 

 

Michael was probably over age 15 when he was bound out to service about March 1753. In 1771 he acquired and settled land in the present Dorchester Co., SC. After the close of the Revolutionary war he moved back to St. Phillips and St. Michaels Parish were he is listed in the 1790 SC census. In about 1792 Michael moved to land situated on the south side of South Edisto River in present Bramberg co., SC. He died there in 1809. His home place is on the map of Barnwell Co. SC. He was an early volunteer in the Revolutionary War, also a member of Indian Field Company of Militia under the
command of Captain John Fullerton. In 1775 he became a member of Captain John Lewis Peyer Imhoff's Company in the 3rd. Regiment Command by Colonel William Thompson. In June of 1776 he was in Captain Jacob Rumph's Company on Sullivan's Island. Between April 14 and May 1, 1778 he was in the East Florida Invasion and in October 1779 at the unsuccessful siege of Savannah by the Americans. The April 19, 1783 payroll of Captain Jacob Rumph's Company in Orangeburgh District command Michael was included for 120 days of duty. From November 1771 thru February of 1801 he had a number of land petitions. He died intestate in the spring of 1809, survived by his widow Mary.

 
 

Michael Zeigler, Sr. (1747-1809) served in the Revolutionary Army. His serial number was AA-8880. He served in the South Carolina Militia under the command of Captain Jacob Rumph. This writer has certified Audited Accounts of his service which show that on July 5, 1784 he was paid Fourteen Pounds one Shilling Two & one half Penny Sterling for 223 days service. He was also paid on
July 1, 1785 the sum of Twelve Pounds Seventeen Shillings one and one half Penny Sterling for 180 days service.

There are several other Indentures for other services in this Audited Account, such as sale of beef cattle and rental of horses and wagons to the Army. Michael Zeigler was paid the equivalent of $75.40 in todays currency for 403 days service in the Militia.

The above vouchers were signed by Col. W.O. Thompson Commanding Officer and Samuel Tate of General Marions Brigade.

Michael Zeigler owned Property on the south fork of the Edisto
River, N.W. of the present Town of Bamburg, South Carolina. Although he died testate and had divided most of his Estate among his children, he still left a fairly large estate. We have no record of the acreage he owned at his death, but the Administration Bond was set at $10,000.00. The Inventory of his Estate list sundry items of household goods and farm products, among those listed were sheep, hogs, cattle, horses, blacksmith tools, farm implements, cotton, corn, carpenter tools and various other commodities. He also left 14 slaves. The Administrators were, Conrad Zeigler (son), Jacob Zeigler (son), Jacob Ridgdill (son-in-law) and John Holman (son-in-law).

Michaels daughters married as follows: Mary to James Carson, Martha to John Holman, Elizabeth to Jacob Ridgdill, and Margaret to Thornton Cox. Martha Piquot.

3.  JOHN ZEIGLER (MICHAEL2, FRITZ (VEIT) FREDERICK1) was born February 12, 1778 in Orangeburgh district of South Carolina, and died February 1849 in Catahoula Parish, La.  He married SARAH LIVICA in Orangeburgh district of South Carolina.

The land owned by John Zeigler at the time of his death was on the old Monroe road about 13 miles from Harrisonburgh. It is about where the stage coach depot was located, owned and operated by Benjamin F. Cassels, Benjamin was John's son-in-law married to Catherine Zeigler November 10, 1824.

 

John Zeigler was affiliated with the Whig Party and was duly qualified to vote in Catahoula Parish in October 1840-Tippecanoe Register-Judge McGebee.

 

John Zeigler served in the War of 1812 from September 19, 1812 to March 18, 1813. He was a private in Captain Jacob Guice's Company of Infantry, from the Militia of Mississippi Territory in the command of Col. Ferdinand L. Claiborne.

 

 

  PROBATE RECORDS

 

 Succession was filed March 26, 1849 and states that John Zeigler died in February of 1849. Names his wife and son Robert. His wife Sarah was appointed Administrator. All personal property, not including land was appraised at $468.52.

 

 On November 8, 1860 another petition was filed by John Zeigler's son Simpson, stating that the assets of the estate were not being properly administered. The petition asked that the assets be inventoried, appraised and sold at public auction so that the heirs could receive their share.

SARAH ELIZABETH ZEAGLER (FRANCES M. 5, JOSEPH 4, JOHN ZEIGLER 3, MICHAEL 2, FRITZ (VEIT) FREDERICK 1) was born August 22, 1878, and died April 16, 1972 in Winnsboro, La. She married ELE WAYNE OTWELL February 21, 1901, son of RICHARD OTWELL and LOUVICE VOLENTINE.

Death claimed Fred P. Zeagler of Fort Necessity Saturday in a local clinic. He was 77 years old. Funeral services for Mr. Zeagler were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Hershel Clanton officiating.
Burial was in Catahoula Cemetery. Surviving Mr. Zeagler are: three sons, Roy V. Zeagler, Cochran, Ga. , Fred P. Zeagler, Jr., La Puente, Calif., and Harold H. Zeagler, Vidalia; two daughters, Mrs. James Spatola, Waycross, Ga., and Mrs. Edward Bringol, Vidalia. two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Otwell, Extension and Mrs. Pink Otwell, Fort Necessity; a brother, Walter Zeagler, Enterprise; and 10 grandchildren.
