Hi and welcome to Ruby's Backyard Birds!! Ruby's Backyard Bird's is a new addition to RubyRed's Parlor and was created in August of 1998. Last spring I hung our first birdfeeders... a Hummingbird feeder and an Oriole feeder. We had seen an occasional Hummingbird in the yard so knew they were about somewhere and also knew that there are supposed to be Orioles in this part of the country as well. Both of these are liquid feeders which you fill with a sugar water mix. They both attract HORNETS and other BEES as well as birds. It's taken most of the summer for a Hummingbird or two to turn into regular visiters and we never have seen an Oriole, but the feeders (and the new hobby) are turning into a great success. As well as the Hummingbirds, we've hosted a huge number of House Finches, Chickadees, a Mourning Dove, a special surprise visiter, and a variety of birds I have yet to identify. Just lately I've added a sunflower seed feeder (about three weeks ago) which has been an attraction to a ton of birds, and today I put out a thistle feeder (which the finches should love) and a couple of suet feeders. While I haven't invested money in a birdbath, I did create a makeshift one using an old garden bench and an aluminum roasting pan. I've found that as long as you position it correctly, the birds aren't picky about asthetics!! |
