Linda's Garden:

Kid's Garden of Excellence Award

Thank you for your interest in the Kid's Garden of Excellence Award This award now is given in memory of it's first recipient, 10 year-old Jake, the Bean Boy of former "The Slug Crossing" website. Jake was my inspiration for this award and it gave me great pleasure to develop it and award it to him for all his work in gardening and on his webpage.

Jake enjoyed growing plants in his family's garden (especially green beans which he loved to eat). He enjoyed helping elderly people in their community garden plots, doing some of the weeding and other chores that were difficult for them to perform. Jake volunteered at the Phipps Conservatory assisting in the planting of the Children's Butterfly Garden there. He was a great favorite with the adult volunteers. Jake was a happy, giggling boy and he was easy to love.

Jake also loved to write. He filled many computer disks with his thoughts. He hoped to be a writer when he grew up, but this was not meant to be for Jake.

Jake passed away on September 11, 1998 after a long bout of illness. And while we will always miss him, we know that we will see glimpses of him in the flowers and butterflies at the conservatory and everywhere. We'll see him in the blue skies above us, the flower and vegetable patches we tend (especially in the bean vines), and in the appearance and voices of children everywhere. Jake we miss you, but we are glad are as free as an eagle on a breeze. For this we are thankful. The "Kids Garden of Excellence Award" will continue as a memorial to our special Jake, the Bean Boy.
