BATTERED WOMEN:

"TRUST BETRAYED"
*Less than every 15 seconds a woman is battered.

*2 to 4 million women are battered by their spouse or intimate parnter per year. 20% of them are seiously or fatally injured.

*Women have a 9 times better chance of being asulted at home than on the street.

SIGNS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
*Domestic violence towards women exceeds the number of women raped, mugged and in automobile accidents combined.

*In the United States there are 38,000 animal shelters. That is three times the number of battered women's shelters. (Do we have a values and funding problem here?) *Battering of women is the cause of:

40,000 doctor visits per year

30,000 hospital emergency room visits per year

100,000 total days of hospitalization per year

* The battering of pregnant women is the number one cause of birth defects. It out numbers all of the medical reasons for birth defects combined. * One third of domestic violence is done by professionals (doctors, psychologists, etc.) *Domestic violence is the reason for the ending of 22% of middle class marriages. *Domestic violence is the most under-reported crime in the US. *Between 1967 and 1973 (during the Vietnam war), 39,000 women and children were killed due to the war in Vietnam. Nearly half that number (17,500) of women and children were killed in the United States.

* ONE IN THREE female homicides were slain by intimate or ex-intimate partners.

WHY DON'T BATTERED WOMEN LEAVE? (I've received comments on these statistics, saying I shouldn't discourage women. This is not here to discourage women, it's here to inform EVERYONE OF THESE PROBLESM.) * WOMEN WHO LEAVE BATTERERS ARE 75% more LIKELY OF BEING KILLED BY THE BATTERER.

* THEY WON'T HAVE SUPPORT: WOMEN AND CHILDREN FLEEING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AT HOME MAKE UP 36-60% OF ALL HOMELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

* IN THE MAJORITY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, THE FIRST INCIDENCE OF VIOLENCE OCCURS YEARS INTO THE RELATIONSHIP/MARRIAGE.
