Everything old is new again! Trends in quilting appear to be no exception. Crazy Quilts--apparently all the rage in the "90's" a hundered years ago are once again a very popular venue of artistic expression amongst quilters today.
These lavish beauties appeared on the world scene amidst the Victorian Era, and provided a showcase for women to display their needlework talents. Combining quilt piecing in a random fashion, with beautiful embroidery, these "quilts" became decorative pieces in a household--in sharp contrast to the other more utilitarian and practical quilts which were commonly made outside of this "craze."
Crazy quilting seems to have been a relatively short-lived trend of the 19th Century, perhaps owing to their being considered rather a frivolous use of time and textiles. We have some beautiful examples of Crazy Quilts of the past from which we can draw inspiration for our own modern masterpieces--some of these are even here in cyberspace. There are still others documented in books. Some of what I've found will be presented here, and hopefully this page will be a good starting point in your own research on CQ's.
