A Marriage Record

The 1878 marriage record of my 3x
great-grandparents,
Antonio de Almeida and Joaquina Candida.

Marriage records are an excellent means of getting a lot of information quickly. Names, ages, birthplaces, residences, occupations, relationships, and more are all at your fingertips. Occasionally, you also come across one which lists a parent or grandparent as deceased (very important in narrowing down the search window when looking for those elusive death records). I consider marriage records to be my number one choice of Portuguese genealogical papers.

THE ORIGINAL TEXT AND ITS TRANSLATION
Aos cinco dias do mez de Maio do anno de
mil, e outo centos, e setenta, e cinco nesta
Igreja Parochial de Germil Concelho de
Penalva do Castello Dioceze de Vizeu, na
minha prezenca comparecerao os Nubentes
Antonio de Almeida, e Joaquina Candida,
os quaes sei serem os proprios, com todos os
papeis do estillo correntes, e sem
impedimento algum canonico, ou civil para o
cazamento tenho sedo despensados em
segundo gravi de Consanguinidade, e segundo
affinidade illicita: elle de idade de vinte, e trez
annos Solteiro Jornaleiro natural, e morador
desta lugar, e freguezia de Germil baptizado
nesta Igreja de Germil, filho legitimo de
Joze Antonio, Jornaleiro, e de Jozefa Rita
naturaes de Germil, e ella de idade de trinta e
um annos Solteira natural, e moradora nesta
lugar de Germil, baptizada nesta Igreja de
Germil, filha legitima de Antonio
Marques, e de Guiamar de Jezuz propriatarios
naturaes de Germil, os quem Nubentes se
reciberam por marido, e mulher, e os uni
em Matrimonio procedendo
em todo esta acto conforme
o Rito da Santa Madre Igreja Catholica
Appostolica Romana tenho benecao de
annel Nupcias. Forao testemunhos, que sei
serem os proprios Manoel Cabral Pinto
Alfaiata Viuvo, e Francisco Ferreira
cazado propriatario moradores neste
lugar de Germil. E para constar lavrei
em duplicado este assento, que depois
de ser lido, e conferido perante os Conjuges,
e testemunhas comigo a assignou a
testemunha Manoel Cabral, e os mais nao
assignarao por nao saberem escrever. Era ut
supra.

 On the fifth day of the month of May in the year
one thousand eight hundred seventy eight, in the
parish church of Germil, municipality of
Penalva do Castello, Diocese of Vizeu, into
my presence appeared the betrothed,
Antonio de Almeida and Joaquina Candida,
whom I know and vouch for, with all of the
documents of the correct type, and without
impediment either canonical or civil to
marriage, I gave my permission at the
second level of kinship and the second
of illicit affinity. He is aged twenty three
years, single, a journalist, a native and resident
of the area and parish of Germil, was baptized
in the Church of Germil, the legitimate son of
Joze Antonio, a journalist, and Jozefa Rita,
natives of Germil. She is age thirty
one years, single, a native and resident of the
area of Germil, was baptized in the Church
of Germil, the legitimate daugher of Antonio
Marques and Guiamar de Jezuz, homeowners
and natives of Germil. The betrothed were
received as husband and wife, and were united
in matrimony in a ceremony
which was conducted in complete accordance
with the Rites of the Holy Mother Catholic-
Apostolic Church of Rome. I have blessed the
wedding ring. The witnesses, whom I
know and vouch for, are Manoel Cabral Pinto,
a widowed tailor, and Francisco Ferreira,
a married homeowner, both residents of the
area of Germil. In testimony thereof, I wrote
in the duplicate of this record, which was later
read and checked by the newlyweds
and witnesses. Signing with me will be the
witness Manoel Cabral, but the rest will not
sign, as they do not know how to write. Date as
above.
