WELCOME (Tsi lu gi)!I am glad that you stopped to visit. My name is W. Dwight Harris. My Cherokee name is U-ne-gv U-lo-gi-li "White Cloud" and I live in Chicago, Illinois (The Windy City). I was born in the The Heart of Dixie State "ALABAMA". I was raised here in Chicago. I am of "IRISH", "DUTCH" (Black Dutch) and CHEROKEE "INDIAN". I must admit I am a genealogy nut !! I have made a committment to search out my past families as well as the present ones. Now I have to admit I have not done so bad. I have traced my some of my family back to "1333" and "1450" now that is not bad if I have to say so myself!
"CHEROKEE PRAYER BLESSING" May the warm winds of heaven Blow softly upon your house May the great Spirit Bless all who enter there. May your Mocassins Make happy tracks In many snows, And May the rainbow Always touch your shoulder! I am a proud and honored member of the "ECHOTA CHEROKEE TRIBE OF ALABAMA". I am about 1/2 of Cherokee. My sister Shelva Sue Harris Forbes "Little Redbird" and my brother Johnny Wayne Harris "Stubborn Eagle" is also members of the Echota Cherokee Tribe and we all belong to the Deer Clan. My Father "Leonard Harris" grandmothers were of Cherokee descent. His one Grandmother "Nancy Ann Forrester" was full blooded Cherokee and his other Grandmother "Paralee "Mandy" Britt" was 1/2 Cherokee Indian. My Mother "Eva Smith Harris" also had Cherokee Indian in her as well. Her Father "M. Jeff Smith's" side of the family,His Father "John Rector Smith" was a 1/4 Cherokee and his Mother "Mosourie Jane Hamilton" was 1/2 Cherokee Indian. So now one can see how I have Cherokee Indian Blood in me and I must admit I am very proud to have Indian blood running through my veins! I really feel the Native Americans were done so wrong. They are the true Blooded American! SEAL OF THE ECHOTA CHEROKEE TRIBE OF ALABAMA "There is no such thing as part-Cherokee! Either you're Cherokee or you're not. It isn't the quantity of Cherokee blood in your veins that is important, but the quality of it...your pride in it. I have seen full-bloods who have virtually no idea of the great legacy entrusted to their care. Yet I have seen people with as little 1/500th blood quantum who inspire the spirits of their ancestors because they make being Cherokee a proud part of their everyday life." words of Jim Pell, Principal Chief of the North Alabama Cherokee Tribe. On the "BLACK DUTCH" it is very complicated to explain here, Black Dutch is someone that is mixed with Indian. Years ago when someone was of mixed blood, such as White & Indian they were not entitled to vote or even own land in some parts of this country. To my understanding alot came from the Appalachians Mountain areas of the United States ..... I will have a link for you on the "MELUGEONS", "BLACK DUTCH" AND "BLACK IRISH"! Remember one thing that if a individual was of White and Indian blood they would have been considered Black Dutch or they could have been Black Irish. If you are looking in the Census' for some of your family and they are from the Southern Region, and you can not find any of them. Its possible they are listed under "Persons of Color" this is how they were listed in the United States Census years back. One has to check out every avenue when he/she is seeking and searching for his family roots. Well I am sure glad you stopped in and if I have enlightened you in any way, then I feel that my Homepage is gonna be great! ..... Don't forget to drop a line or two. Thanks for stopping in and don't forget to visit my "Advitiser's and visit "STUBBORN EAGLE'S CASINO PAGE" May Lady Luck be good to you! Oh Yeah! Apply for my AWARD if you have a website! Please don't forget to SIGN MY GUESTBOOK AT THE END OF THE PAGE! Wa-do! (Thank You). |
"THE MELUNGEONS" ..... As early as 1654, English and French explorers int the southern Appalachians reported seeing dark-skinned, brown- and blue eyed, and European- featured people speaking broken Elizabethan English, living in cabins, tilling the land, smelting silver, practicing Christianity, and most perplexing of all, claiming to be "Portyghee." Declared "free persons of color" in the late 1700s by the English and Scotch-Irish immigrants, the Melungeons, as they were known, were driven off their lands and denied voting rights, education, and the right to judicial process. The law was enforced mercilessly and sometimes violently in the resoundingly successful effort to totally disenfranchise these earliest Americans settlers. These Melungeons were a remarkable people caught up in a nightmare not of their own making. Perhaps history can finally amend itself and belatedly recognize the incredible achievement of these brave and lonely people, who were among the earliest American pioneers, and bring at long last an end to the Inquistion. White settlers in the hills of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolinga and South Carolina pushed the Cherokee Indian Tribes into North Alabama. The Cherokee in turn encroached upon the Creek territory. There were sporadic battles between the tribes. Black Creek Falls had long been a trading station and ceremonial ground. Legend is that Noccalula, a beautiful daughter of a Cherokee Chief, had been promised by her father to a Creek sub-chief as an exchange for peace between the Nations. It is related the Noccalula could not bear to become the wife of a Creek warrior as she loved so deeply a brave of her own tribe. Instead of being married, on her wedding day she jumped to her death off the rocks of the Black Creek Falls, later to become known as the Noccalula Falls. The Indian sign language which is prominently inscribed on the rocks in the Noccalula Falls area confirms the Noccalula did jump to her death at a point near the location of the monument now erected honoring the Indians who once inhabited this area. |
