WHAT IS A LIVING BOOK?
A living Book is a book that is written by an author who takes
a special interest in the subject and the facts are presented
in story form. To test a book as a living book, do the one
page test. Does it promote high moral character, courage,
or generosity? Does it capture your attention? If so, read a page,
any page. Does it make you want to find out more? If so,
this would be a living book for you.

WHAT IS A WHOLE BOOK?
A whole book is a book written by one author, usually.
It is not a book with lots of different stories written by different
authors. Look for books that are complete and unabridged.
This way you will be reading the words that the author
intended you to read. Many books have been dumbed down to a
lower reading level. Try to avoid these as read alouds.

WHAT IS TWADDLE?
Twaddle are books that are dumbed down. They are disguised as
Readers, books such as Dr. Suess, Series books, and etc. I am not
saying these are all bad, but I would limit them. They do
have their place. When a child is reading or being read living
books, their vocabulary increases, their interests change, and they
seem to pick up good habits and so forth from these living books.

WHAT IS NARRATION?
Narration is the telling back what you have read, seen,
or experienced. When a child can tell you what they learned, written
tests are not necessary. Narration can be in the form of telling
back verbally, written, or even in pictures.

WHAT SUBJECTS ARE COVERED USING THIS METHOD?
Bible, Literature, History, Science, Language, Spelling,
Independent Reading, Composition, Poetry, Handwriting, Math,
Foreign Language, Art Appreciation, Music Appreciation,
Geography, Handicrafts.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS METHOD?
School can become more enjoyable with this method. It is inexpensive to use this
method since all you really need to purchase is a language program such as
Simply Grammar or LLATL and a Math book. Most that use this
method buy lots of good literature. But, you can get it at the library.
Many enjoy the short lessons which can help cut down on dawdling.
Hearing about real people instead of just cold, hard
facts makes it more interesting. Hands-on science, art and music appreciation,
and literature make for a well-rounded study.
