My Favorite Proverbs

To know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity; to give prudence (wisdom, craftiness) to the simple (open-minded), to the young man knowledge and discretion - Proverbs 1:2-4. ~ Note: Studying the Book of Proverbs will give you wisdom.

A wise man will hear (understand, obey) and increase learning (there is more to learn, the wise get added instruction), and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel (get good advice, direction), to understand a proverb and an enigma (interpretation), the words of the wise and their riddles (hard questions, parables, perplexing sayings) - Proverbs 1:5,6.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction - Proverbs 1:7. ~ Note: Do not despise instruction or think this is insignificant. Fear does mean fear. If we don't fear the LORD we might do whatever our carnal mind pleases, and that can lead to spiritual death in hell. It also means to have respect and reverence of the LORD.

For Parents and Children

My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother - Proverbs 1:8. ~ Note: The word for son also means children, both male and female. Therefore, this proverb is not for male children only. Everyone should obey their parents as they are growing up. To hear means we pay attention to and obey. Instruction also means correction and discipline. The law (of your mother) also means her direction and instruction. With less discipline of a child they are more likely to grow up being a slave to sin, or worse for society, a criminal. So be wise, parents, and discipline your children. I'm not writing about being violent, as that is against the governmental laws of today. Discipline and correction come in many other ways besides that. It will make for a better world in the future.

My son (children), if sinners entice (persuade) you, do not consent (to be willing, yield to, accept) - Proverbs 1:10. ~ Note: If people say, "but we're all sinners," do not take heed to them justifying their sinful ways. One is a sinner or a saint. A sinner is someone being a slave to sin. They practice living sinful, because the Lord Jesus Christ has not set them free from the bondage of sin, by them surrendering to Him. A saved person is someone who practices obedience leading to righteousness (Romans 6:16). Many so-called Christians will turn out to be spiritually dead wrong (Matthew 7:21-23 and 25:1-12). Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God (1 John 3:10).

My son, do not walk (live a manner of life) in the way (their habits) with them, keep your foot from their path - Proverbs 1:15. ~ Note: So do not live like, nor associate on a journey with sinners. The next few proverbs in the bible after this explain that their evil ways will cost them their own soul.

Wisdom CRIES OUT, Saying:

"Turn (repent) at my rebuke (correction, chastisement); surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you... whoever listens (to give heed, to consent, agree, be obedient) to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil." - Proverbs 1:23,33. ~ Note: If we repent from our sins, the spirit of wisdom will be on us, we will understand God's word, and have no fear of evil.

... if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God - Proverbs 2:1-5. ~ Note: Wisdom is near and is able to get, but it's not easy getting wisdom. Wisdom is hidden and you have to search for it, so study the bible and let it become real to you.

For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright (righteous, proper); He is a sheild to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints (godly, holy, faithful ones) - Proverbs 2:6-8. ~ Note: So if we live right, which is according to God's word. He will give us the correct wisdom and protect us. Thanks to the LORD!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge (consider) Him, and He shall direct (make straight, to esteem right, approve) your paths (way of living) - Proverbs 3:5,6. ~ Note: Don't be prideful of your own thinking, depend on the LORD and consider what He wants you to do. He makes our way of living right. Hallelujah!

Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil - Proverbs 3:7. ~ Note: Don't be conceited thinking you know it all. Fear the Lord and depart from evil ways.

Happy is the man who finds (to learn, to be in the possession of) wisdom, and the man who gains understanding - Proverbs 3:13. ~ Note: The word man is referring to mankind in general. The word man is the whole human race which includes men and women. We are all in this together. When we seek to learn wisdom, we are happy. The word for happy also means we are blessed. That is very similar to when Jesus said, "blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" (Luke 11:28). We get wisdom by learning God's word and that makes us happy!

Wisdom is prudence in religious affairs. That means we are then capable of exercising sound judgment in practical matters of life. We then make better decisions for ourselves and that affects our family, too. Wisdom makes us cautious in our conduct and we manage carefully. This is the Gospel of peace that brings glad tidings of good things. Wisdom will get us to live right as proclaimed by God. When we have insight from God's word we make sound judgements and that makes us happy.

Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; for the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught - Proverbs 3:25,26. ~ Note: Trust and hope in the Lord. He will keep us from being taken or captured when the wicked come to ruin us.

Do not strive (make complaint, quarrel) with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm - Proverbs 3:30.

The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked (ungodly, guilty of sin), but He blesses the home of the just (righteous, lawful) - Proverbs - 3:33.

Wisdom is the principal (best, chief) thing; therefore get wisdom... - Proverbs 4:7. ~ Note: Whatever you can get in life, wisdom is most important.

Wisdom Gives You A Longer Life

Hear (agree to, obey), my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many... give attention (pay attention) to my words; incline (turn) your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart (do not let them be lost from view, do not become devious) from your eyes (what you think, your mental and spiritual faculties); keep them in the midst of your heart (retain them in your memory); for they are life to those who find (to find out, learn) them, and health to all their flesh - Proverbs 4:10-22. ~ Note: When God's word is taught to us, it will let us receive divine revelation on how to live our lives. Then the years of our lives will be many.

Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips (language) far from you - Proverbs 4:24.

Let me suggest that you read chapter 5 to learn the peril of adultery.

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He ponders all his paths (the LORD knows everything you do). His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, and he is caught in the cords of his sin. He shall die for lack of instruction, and in the greatness of his folly (in the outcome of his foolishness) he shall go astray - Proverbs 5:21-23.

A worthless (naughty, good for nothing, unprofitable) person, a wicked (unrighteous) man, walks with a perverse mouth - Proverbs 6:12. ~ Note: If you care to not be wicked, then watch what you say.

These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud (to exalt oneself, magnify oneself) look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord (strife, contention) among brethren - Proverbs 6:16-19.

Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul - Proverbs 6:32.

Chapter 7 gives further warnings of immoral sex. It's such a big deal that it talks a lot about it. If more people heard this, then more people would repent so they can go to heaven. Jesus said, "unless you repent you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:3).

Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, do not stray into her paths; for she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell (the OT designation for the abode of the dead, wicked sent there for punishment, righteous not abandoned to it), descending to the chambers of death - Proverbs 7:25-27.

For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her - Proverbs 8:11. ~ Note: Wisdom is far more valuable than anything else.

Wisdom is CRYING OUT in Chapter 8

"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way (manner, habit) and the perverse mouth I hate." - Proverbs 8:13. ~ Note: If we fear the LORD we will hate misery and injury. Wisdom also hates that; and pride and arrogance and the perverse mouth, too.

"Now therefore, listen to me, my children, for blessed are those who keep My ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not disdain it. Blessed is the man who listens to Me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the LORD; but he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death." - Proverbs 8:32-36.

Do not correct a scoffer (mocker, one who talks arrogantly, boaster), lest he hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning - Proverbs 9:8,9.

The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of wisdom - Proverbs 10:21.

When pride comes, then comes shame (dishonour, disgrace); but with the humble (lowly, modest) is wisdom - Proverbs 11:2.

It is the moral character of your inner man; your mind, your will, your soul. It is also our knowledge, thinking, and wisdom; plus where we get our emotions from. If our soul is glad then we reflect that with a happy face. Countenance means face. Our face will be glad, joyful, pleasing, and actually made to be beautiful. That is what the word for cheerful means. We get a nice looking happy face when we seek after and attain wisdom from God. God is great, and people will see that on our face.

Acting wisely will make us glad. The last half of this verse says that if we trust, have confidence, and are secure in the LORD we will be happy and blessed. People Will See If You Are A Good Person

As in water face reflects face, so a man's heart reveals the man - Proverbs 27:19. ~ Note: You can see your own face when you look directly toward the flat surface of water. It is like a mirror. We then see and know what we look like and what we are. What this proverb is saying is that our heart is just like that. People see our heart when they know what is on our mind, our thinking. Our speech will tell them that. Plus people can easily see our emotions on our face. If we have a good heart of moral character this gets revealed to others. People will know our heart simply by seeing our character. If you are a good person others will see that. If you don't think you are that good, then turn to the LORD and learn His word. Jesus will change you!

Do you see a man hasty (to urge, insist) in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him - Proverbs 29:20. ~ Note: Instead of speaking whatever first comes to mind and insisting on it, it's best to be silent or choose words carefully.

A man's pride will bring him low (humiliated), but the humble in spirit will retain honor - Proverbs 29:23.

An unjust (unrighteous, wrong) man is an abomination (a disgusting thing) to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked - Proverbs 29:27.

Every word of God is pure (a refiner, to test); He is a shield to those who put their trust (to make refuge, confide or hope) in Him - Proverbs 30:5.

If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth - Proverbs 30:32.

The Women Get The Last One

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing (vanity), but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised (to shine, be commended) - Proverbs 31:30.

Once Saved, Always Saved IS WRONG

No matter where you are with God, keep reading His word. It sure does help. The most important thing I hope for is your salvation. Be sure that Jesus Christ is your Lord and that He set you free from sin. If there's any problems, please see my "The Way To Heaven..." page. May your faith ignite to know the divine in 2009. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. Sincerely, Patrick.
