MY ANCESTRY

Welcome ~ The following is my ancestry as I have been able to uncover it so far (the flowers before the names indicate my direct descent from that person):

My ancestral cottage at Croagh (which is the name of a steep mountain near Pettigo) lies at the top of that mountain and is nestled between two beautiful loughs (lakes). I'm going to be uploading pictures of it soon. The cottage walls are still partly standing, about 5 feet high, but the thatched roof is gone. There are also some out buildings on the property. It is a magnificent location. When looking through the records, below, please note that the spelling of the name changes often between "Monaghan" and "Monahan" as the names were often recorded phonetically. My g-g-granda, HUGH MONAGHAN, emigrated from Donegal to the US aboard the ship 'Clare' during 'An Gorta Mor', the Great Hunger. He arrived on June 6, 1849 in NYC only 19 years old and illiterate.
