Overprint and Surcharge

Ink appled to a stamp to commemorate some special event or to change the use of the stamp, is known as an overprint.

A stamp which has had a new value printed on it is said to be surcharged.
Some frugal countries will surcharge their old stamps for re-use rather than destroying them, thus avoiding waste.
