Miscellany
Wooters/Richardson/Farthing “ In a personal letter from Dr. W. Farthing Sargent, of Effingham, IL., he set forth some facts concerning the above lines. Since there are others in the society who are interested in these lines, we quote his letter and the information. MEW” “In punching in some of my documents onto a computer I ran across the enclosed and since it concerned the early origins of your Wooters, thought you might be interested.” “W.D. Farthing lived in Odin, was an attorney and owned a general store and saloon there. He alternated about three terms with Silas Bryan as county States Attorney. He was the son of Hamilton Farthing and the father of Chester and Paul Farthing.” “ The following information was given to Wm. D. Farthing ( father of Paul Farthing) by Thomas L. Farthing, a son of Landy Lindsay Farthing, Friday P.M. March 22nd. 1901.” “John Wooters died in Guilford Co.,N.C. in his 107th. Year. His son, Levin Wooters, born in Guilford Co,.N.C. near Greensboro, died in Marion Co., IL. Sept 1852.”
( note from MEW: While it should not be considered as carved in stone, my records show that John’s son Levin was born in Caroline Co., MD, rather than Guilford Co., N.C., and died in Marion Co., IL., 22 Oct. 1855. The 1850 census shows Levin’s birthplace as Maryland. Noah Wooters Sr., who was my g.g.grandfather, was a brother of Levin.)
“John Richardson was born in Maryland on the east shore, moved to N.C. His daughter was born in N.C. and married Levin Wooters in that state and moved to Marion Co., IL. With her husband and father.”
(Note from MEW: The daughter mentioned was Sarah Richardson. My records show that she was born in Maryland rather than N.C. ca 1790 and died in Marion Co., IL. In 1876. The 1850, 1860, and 1870 censyses show her birth place as Maryland. No one seems to know where Levin and Sarah(Richardson) Wooters are buried.)
“Elizabeth Wooters Farthing was born in Robinson Co., TN. And moved to Marion Co., IL. Oct 1826, arriving on the first day of that month.”
(Note from MEW: Elizabeth Wooters was daughter of Levin and Sarah (Richardson) Wooters. I show that she was born in Robertson Co., TN., rather than Robinson Co. To the best of my knowledge there was no Robinson Co. She married in Marion Co.,IL. Hamilton Farthing, son of Dudley and Mary (Adams) Farthing.)
“William Farthing died in Pittsylvania Co. VA. His sons were five (5): Joab, Stokley, William, ?Miniard, Dudley.”
“ John Farthing died in Pittsylvania Co., VA. His sons were four (4): Abner, John Bunyan, James and Joel.”
“ Landy Farthing died in Pittsylvania Co., VA. His sons were four (4): Richard, Lemuel, Landy Lindsay and Watson.”
“ Dudley Farthing died in Logan Co.,KY. His only son was Hamilton.”
“Abner Farthing died in Logan Co., KY. His only son was John (called Jackey).”
“Solomon Farthing died near Tamaroa, Perry Co.,IL. and his sons were two (2): Williamson, died at Tamaroa, and Hicks was drowned in the Illinois River.”
“ Richard Farthing died in Logan Co.,KY. His sons were five (5): Louis, Enoch, Coleman, Ephraim and Peter.”
“ Dudley Farthing died in Logan Co., KY. And is buried near the South Bank (about 150 yards) of the Red river on a farm known as the old Townsend farm, a little north of west of Adairsville two or three miles, and six miles north of (east) Keyesburg, KY. The spot is about 100 yards from the spot where General Jackson killed General (sic, he was a Colonel) Dickinson in a duel.”
