In 1869, Amite County was the first in the state of Mississippi to erect
a memorial to its sons killed during the Civil War. The marble obelisk
stands just off county seat Liberty's main street in the square between
the Methodist and Presbyterian churches. The names of soldier who
died are inscribed on its four sides. This photograph was featured in the
booklet honoring Amite County's Sesquicentennial in 1959. Rosters
of the units from Amite County indicate the names of those who died.
Photograph of the memorial monument erected in 1997 on the front lawn of the courthouse in Liberty to honor those individuals from Amite County Mississippi who were killed in the service of their country in World Wars One and Two, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Because this photograph was taken at the wrong time of day, the names are barely visible. A larger copy will allow family members to decipher some of the names. My grandfather's younger brother, Emil Payne, was killed in the last weeks of WWII and his name is listed.
