Descendants of William Emanuel Doty

1. William Emanuel Doty (Levi. Samuel. John. Samuel. Samuel. Edward) was born June 17,1822 near Johnstown,PA. and died April 20.1912 in Pullman, WA. He married Susanna Charlotte Crull January 07, 1849 in probably PA.
Notes for William Emanuel Doty:
Started migrating westward from PA. In 1844.finally accomplishing almost a complete span of the continent (listed in Kansas census in 1870).
Final move in 1876 was to the eastern part of WT.
His 13 children, had been born in lndiaina, Iowa and Kansas. The proof affidavit for Wm Doty's homestead in Kansas describes the improvements: a house of log & stone, tight roof & floor, having 2 doors & 2 windows. Cultivated 65 acres of land, dug 3 wells of good water, built a stable, planted fruit trees & anorchard.

Bv the time he had settled in WT his 2 oldest daughters were married to brothers. Sylvester & Theodore Glaspey. Elizabeth had married John Karnes in Kansas. William's 2 oldest sons levi & William married at the end of the trail Ida & Sarah Glaspey (daughters of John Glaspey, a brother of Theodore & Sylvester) in Walla Walla, WA. Both families had been in the wagon train.
In 1975 a resident of Pullman, WA who had lived on one of the Doty farms when he was growing up, remembered William as an elderly man who had a large family & built 3 homes about one half mile apart & planted 3 orchards of apples. plums. cherries & pears, as well as cottonwoods & poplar trees & a huge flower garden of lilacs, tulips, lilies & iris in front of his house.Previously proved a homestead in Kansas. thus. his land near Pullnan was composed of a 160 acre pre-emption claim & an 80 acre timber culture claim. The latter proved by planting trees. Member of the United Bretheran Church in Whitman Co., WA. Lula Neet. his granddaughter. discribed him as a devout man who could preach a sermon and who often provided his home for church meetings. Deeded his 80 acres to his 2 youngest sons in 189?, however son Freeman died 6 years before William. Listed in his son Grant's household in 1910 census, where he died in 1912. Moved to Porter County. Indiana when he was a boy. In 1875 came by wagon train from Indiana to Walla Walla, Wa. His wife's father was the wagon master.

Crossed the plains with her family by way of the Oregon Trail when she was 13. Remembered by her granddaughter Velma Lorraine Rodeen as "the best grandma a child could have" and a hard working woman who did everything from mending fences to making doll furniture from wooden apple boxes.Buried City Cemetery, Pullman; WA; (LLB 1993).

Both parents died before he was 17; his father & 2 brothers died of Civil War injuries. Came west with Johnny Byemaster, a neighbor, in 1869. at age 17, from Grand Detour, IL. Henry and Johnny were rafting logs to the mill when Johnny drown in the Cleanwater River, ID. (LLB 1998). With his wife, homesteaded 80 acres in 1880 near Armstrong Railroad Station, Whitman County, WT. (LLB 1993)

Born on the family homestead in Armstrong District west of Pullman, WA. Attended the old Enterprise grade school, in the same district, through the 3rd grade. Worked in the fields along side her husband, kept house and cooked for the family and the harvest
crews. Measured ingredients for cakes by the handfull & pinchful, baked a sample of the batter, in the oven of the wood stove, to see if it needed adjustment. (LEM 1997) Member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Died of a heart attack; buried Pullman City Cemetary, Pullman; WA. (obituary)

Taught himself manv musical instruments.(LEM 1997) Born in the Banner District northwest of Pullman, WA. Attended the Banner School, United Bretheran College at Albion, WA and Washington Agricultural College ( now WSU at Pullman). Farmer & carpenter employed by Cliff Parr, a Pullman contractor & the Pacific Coast Elevator Co. at Pullman which is now Whitman County Growers.
During WWII helped with the construction of the Naval Supply Depot at Spokane. Member of the Nazarene Church. Buried Pullman City Cemetary, Pullman; WA. (obituary) Belonged to Whelan Grange in Whitman County. (VLRR 1998)
x. William Dewey Lingg, born February 12, 1898 in Washington; died February 09, 1932 in La Crosse, WI, He married Emma Woll.
Notes for William Dewey Lingg:
An Army medic during WWI where he met his future wife, a nurse. Emma was an officer so they were not allowed to marry until they were out of the army, because a wife could not outrank her husband. (MMC 1998)

Had 5 older brothers; their parents were born in Norway. Brother Ole homesteaded in South Dakota. The big wheat ranches are still in the family. (MMC 1998) A nurse and Army officer during WWI. Widowed at age 46. When her daughters went to boarding high school she moved into the Nurses Home connected with La Crosse Lutheran Hospital, continuing her R.N. work there until 1953 when she moved to
Collegedale, TN to take care of her granddaughter Marilyn when Marilyn's parents were starting their teaching careers. Died in Maryland, buried in La Crosse, WI. (MMC 1998)
13. Ulysses Grant Doty (William Emanuel, Levi, Samud, John. Samuel, Samuel, Edward). Was born October 04,1872 in Shridan Twp., Ottawa Co., KS, and died in Lacy. Thurston Co., WA He married Sarah Overhciser 1896.
