EARLY SILK STOCKING ROW AND CENTRAL VAN LEAR

Photo from an old post card

THIS IS AN EARLY SHOT SHOWING SOME OF THE HOUSES ON SILK STOCKING ROW AND THE REAR OF THE NUMBER ONE COMPANY STORE. MOST COMPANY OWNED TOWNS HAD A SECTION WHERE THE BOSSES AND FOREMEN LIVED. THESE HIGHER PAID "COMPANY MEN" WERE ABLE TO PURCHASE THEIR WIVES GENUINE SILK STOCKINGS. THE COMMON LABORERS GENERALLY COULD NOT AFFORD TO SPLURGE ON FANCY CREATURE COMFORTS AND FRILLS.

ALSO, YOU CAN SEE THE REAR OF THE NUMBER ONE COMPANY STORE. THIS STORE WAS LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL SECTION OF TOWN. ROUGHLY ONE QUARTER OF THE STORE STRUCTURE REMAINS. THE VAN LEAR POST OFFICE ACTUALLY SITS WHERE PART OF THE BUILDING USED TO BE.
