Lay Aside Every Weight
Heb. 12:1
By: Rev Richard Puckett
(Heb 12:1 KJV) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witness,
look around you. Do you see people in the room with you? Look out the window do see neighbors houses, are do you ever go to the store, is there people there? We are surrounded by those who see us and know what we are and what we do. A witness tells what he or she sees or hears that they believe to be true. Jesus had is life constantly being watched and most of those watching were not friends but were those seeking to find fault in his life. My friend it is no different for us there are those that see us in our everyday life looking not to see the good about you, but rather the bad. What we forget as they witness for or against us, we witness how much of Christ is in us, how well we know him.You see Christ dwell’s in us, so people are really looking at Christ. We should be his lights, his mirrored image for all to see.
John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. so
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
If have been born again he in now our new blood in us, he changes us from the inside out, and all those that know you will know it to.
2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Cor 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
Gal 6:15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
Someone called me the other day and said that his Pastor had taught that there is no immediate change, friend there is a preacher that needs to read his Bible and sounds to me if a little time on the altar would do him good. For repentance indeed means going the other way, or to turn from our old nature to a new one, the one of Christ. If you haven’t been changed, if you didn’t know if you were forgiven then you are not where you need to be. For if your in the light you can not be in darkness, in other words your eye’s are open, and you will know you are free from the weight of sin.
let us lay aside every weight,
What is a weight? A weight is a burden, a load, it something that has substance. Pay attention to that last part, not every thing that folks carry around is really a weight except in there own minds for it has no substance. Let me put it this way some times folks think that X is mad at them, you ask why do you feel that way and the response is X didn't say anything to me Sunday at church. When you speak to X they were so caught up in what they were doing they just missed speaking. No substance just worries us until it tears down the heart.Heb 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
But there are real weights we sometime carry things that we can’t change, we worry, we carry guilt, we carry our feelings on our elbow. Things such as this we can get rid of, if we let Christ dwell in us and we open the blinds of our spiritual house so his light shines out of us. Sin and weights are not the same thing. But weights can become sin if they are not cast of because of there effect.
and the sin, which doth so easily, beset us,
The first thing one has to understand is what is sin. Sin besets us or puts our spiritual life at a halt we quit growing. When one quits growing they start dying,Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
If you are weighted down with sin you are the servant of the load you carry. Its like diving in a pool of water with your clothes on you can swim for a short time but it tires you out and in time will cause you to down due to the weight of the clothes. If you are weighted down you are not free and Christ makes us free indeed.
John 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
John 15:22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.
There is no excuse for sin in our lives, we are to live a life that is holy. I wasn’t going to get into perfection in this study but let me say this God will not accept sin in our lives. If there were no bibles, if there were no preachers, if Jesus had not come, if you were born with no brain then maybe you could find an excuse. I know we all make mistakes, we stumble we may even fall, but we must repent turn back in the right direction and live as a light in darkness.
Rom 3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
God’s law as given to Moses taught us what sin is, the law didn’t remove the weight of sin in our lives and we all are born sinners. But then Jesus came and gave his life to remove the weight of sin from us forever. What amazes me is we ask him to come into our hearts and we get a new beginning then go right back where he found us. It is like a guy that is given a pardon from prison, for a crime he admits doing, he now has a new beginning. Why would anyone want to go back to that same prison, yet often folks do the same sins again. The penalty for sin never changes, The wage of sin is death.
Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Rom 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Pay attention here,
How shall we that are dead to live any longer therein, there is no excuse for sin in our lives. We must get rid of this weight before it causes us to fall and we can’t get back up until we get rid of this weight. Sin is killing you and will cause you to spend your eternity in hell if you don’t get rid of it.Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Rom 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Now as you look at these verses you see the word fruit beginning to show up. The sin or weight is our fruit, or our substance. Have you ever noticed the limbs of a tree loaded down with fruit how it bends, that is the way bad fruit does us because you see good fruit weighs less and it gets picked off because it is good, which causes the tree to produce more.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Rom 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
1 Cor 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
1 Cor 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
2 Cor 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
Gal 2:17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.
Gal 2:18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
2 Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Eph 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Eph 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.
Now we start to take a look at the weight and what it is. I asked earlier what is sin. Sin is anything that is not right. Anger is a weight that has destroyed more homes and lives, it has destroyed churches by the countless numbers. Anger is a weight when it causes us to do those things, which are wrong, when it brings about bitterness it tears up the foundation of our heart. Anger opens the door for the devil to get into our hearts and lives.
1 Tim 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
Paul’s admits here that those that are Christian’s sometimes sin, and he gives us an immediate response, rebuke them before all. Preachers are supposed to call sin what it is and rebuke those that live in a sinful live. Why then do so many get angry when the sermon is preached that hits home. Because the rebuke is not to condemn but rather to bring unto repentance.
Heb 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
If we would learn to lift each other up in prayer and build them up with good things we see about them it would strength our lives and help keep us soft and tender with God.
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Jesus understands the weights of sin that we carry because he too was tempted just as you and I. But because he overcame it makes it possible for us to overcome sin. We can approach the mercy seat knowing that if we ask he will hear and if he hears he will answer and our sin is desolved. That is grace you get even through you don’t deserve it and if you had to pay for it the price would be too high. So God paid the price in giving us his son, thank you Lord God.
Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
We need to take our lives and the way we live them very carefully. Wilfully sin places us in great danger, in that the price has been paid, we accept it, then go back to the old ways. The price can only be paid once it is a little like a ticket to a movie so long as you have the stub you can get back in, but what happens if your outside and the movie ends? They don’t let you back to see the next feature, beware that while you play in sin you do not lose the reward, if your on the outside when he calls your name you won’t be allowed on the inside of heaven you can count on it.
James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
James 1:16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
James 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
James 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
2 Pet 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
2 Pet 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
What Can I add to these great words, note all of what he says often John’s words are cut up and twisted. He clearly says as Paul did we are all sinners, born into the flesh thus sin, but when we come to Jesus we are changed our sin or weight is gone and we begin a new life. Now if we say, as I have heard some say, I have always been a Christian, or we have never sinned we deceive our selves. The weight of our fleshly character is sin until we put on the character of Christ. Which we can’t do on our own but by the Holy Spirit entering into us we are changed, a new person. The weight is taken away.
1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Here a list of some of the weights that you must cast off. You say I can’t do it, I hate the man that raped my little girl or me, you are right. You can’t but God can. Let the Spirit of God into your life and you will be changed, if you are not changed you do not have the spirit of God. You have not been born again, your thinking changes, your desires change, your goal changes.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal 5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
Gal 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
Gal 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Gal 6:3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
Gal 6:4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 1 John 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
1 John 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
1 John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
1 John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Here John make a clear difference between mistakes and willful sins, all of us falter and come short, we make mistakes, we let things weigh us down, cast them off now before they drown you in flesh. I know a man, which was about to go to prison for writing bad checks to pay employees that worked for his company. Through his intentions were good what did he gain, life in jail. We often have good intentions, but they are not enough, we lied because ….. we cursed because …… we cheated because ….. no excuses is good enough to look back from the plow. Cast off the weight of sin.
and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
I didn’t chose the race but I will run anyway. And if I must run the race of life I will run to win. It won’t help me to get into a hurry just run with patience, this is not a race based on speed, it is a race based on endurance and the quality of the racer. Be the best you can be, don’t carry around the bag of sin and worries just run letting Christ be your legs. You do not have to carry your load, there are others to help pray with you, the Spirit to be in you, Christ to guide you, and God waiting with eternal life for you. Quit playing at being a Christian and be one. A Christian is a person who is a follower of Christ or to be like Christ. God would not tell you to do something you can’t do, he makes a way for you if you let him.
