DANCY
According to Irish Records the spelling should be Pockrich
DANCEY.He came to Canada at age 12 with two elder brothers
Edward and Thomas. They came from County Armagh Ireland.
This was in 1824. He first worked for Squire Delong near
Elgin Ontario. When the Rideau Canal was being built he
drew blocks of stone from Elgin Quarries, which was used
to build the locks and horshoe dam at Jones Falls. His pay
was two shillings sixpence per day - it is presumed that this
money also included pay for the oxen as well. He settled on
Lot 9, Con. 4 South Crosby Tp. Leeds Co. This was the
birthplace of his son John, John's daughter Ardella (my
Mother), my brother Don and myself.

The farm was in the Dancy name for 88 years. Pockrage deeded
land for the Dancy Schoolhouse which is now used as a
residence. Many of the Dancy line are buried in the
Halladay Cemetery in Elgin Ontario.

FRIZZELL (FRASER)
James settled in Roxbury Mass. (Woodstock) in 1652
Lot 35. Family tradition is that James arrived in New
England with the Political Prisoners who had engaged in
the disastrous battles against Cromwell forces and was
one of the clan Fraser prominent as adherents of Charles
11. It is believed he was taken prisoner with his brother
William and may have been one of the prisoners sent to
Barbados and then came to New England. After the battle
of Worcester many Frasers were sold as slaves by their
captors and were sent there for a period of time. It
apparently seemed prudent to change their name to Frizzell
(an ancient form of the name Fraser and a sept of the Clan
Fraser,in order to protect their families left in Britain.
James Frizzell had ten children, among whom was Captain
James - he was sent on expedition to Canada in 1696. In
1705 he petitioned the council to return with his family
to Roxbury to take care of his parents. Petition was
granted. He bought Lot 14 Woodstock Conn. Among his
children was son Isaac. Isaac Frizzell was admitted to
full communion in First Church. He bought property for
130 pounds from Daniel Bacon in Woodstock (78 acres).
Isaac had four children - the oldest being Elisha who
married Eizabeth French. They had ten children - the
third being Elisha Torry born in Montague Mass. November
8, 1775. (From the vital records of Montague Mass.
Birth and History of Sunderland Vol 1.) Elisha Torry
married Clarissa Welch and had thirteen children.

It has been family tradition that Frasers of our line were
U.E. Loyalists. However they did not come directly to
Canada after the American Revolution. It is thought that
because they were Loyalists they may have been persecuted
after the war for their loyalty to the British and because
of this harassment may have been forced to give up their
land and settle in Canada. Hence they reverted to the
original name. (Incidentally at the same time Hepziba
changed her name to Elizabeth about 1779). This is pure
speculation.

It appears that Elisha Torry Fraser came to Canada about
1808 and settled on 60 acres Lot 7 Con. 4 East Whitby near
Brooklyn Ontario. From here they moved to Haldimand Tp.
East of Baltimore, Elisha Torry and his wife are buried in
Academy Hill Cemetery, Massie Family Cemetery - north of
Grafton Ontario. Their fifth child Isaac married Janet
Muirhead in 1830. She was born 1807 Vermont, came to
Lower Canada at age 2, moved to Upper Canada with family
and settled in Haldimand Tp. About 1820. Both Isaac and
Janet are buried in the Academy Hill Cemetery. Their
daughter Esther married Solon Massie.

HENDERSON

Jonathan was the son of David Henderson U.E. of Bastard
Twp. Leeds County. From the Ontario Register we learn
the following (Vol 2 Page 5) "Jonathan Henderson 18 born
in Conecticut farmer approved by J. Breckenridge J.P.
County of Leeds 8th April 1796 was granted Lot
24 Con. 8 Bastard Twp. But as this proved unsatisfactory,
he was granted another." This first grant was about half
covered by water (Lower Beverly Lake). The "other" grant
was Lot 11, Con. 4 South Crosby, Leeds County Ont. This
is presently owned by Earl Powell (1984). Jonathan worked
for a time clearing the land and returned to Vermont where
he married Clarissa Bullard. They then returned to live on
their farm. From Clare Churchill's book "Rideau Reflections"
we learn that their first child was a girl Speda who died
in childhood. Utarpe was next and Parthena was the youngest.
Utarpe lived to 84, she was born in 1807. Jonathan was a
Quaker by faith yet he served in the Militia during the war
of 1812. He operated a nursery on his farm, and many of
the early orchards got their start from here. Some of the
trees I remember were: St. Lawrence, Sam apple, Nursery
apple. He produced Potash which which was sold to Billa
Flint of Brockville and in addition grew HEMP which was used
to bind sheaves of flax during the retting process to make
flax into linen. The Government of the time paid a subsidy
for growing this plant which is now illegal to possess or
grow "Marijuana". The Hemp fibres being tougher than flax
took long to rot so they held the sheaf together while the
flax broke down.

Jonathan died about 1860 and is buried in the cemetery on
the farm he once owned. The graves herein are unmarked
except for field stones. The records for this cemetery
have disappeared over the years - they were last known to
be in possession of Lew Halliday in the States. Tradition
has it that there are 28 persons buried there.
