possible children of William and Nancy

Hardy Deshazo (b.ca. 1780 NC)

There are marriages for Hardy and Abbey in Lincoln Co., NC. These marriages occur just prior to the
time that William shows up in Edgefield Co., SC to join his father and brothers.

Children

Robert (b.1792 SC; d.ca. 1863 Pulaski Co., GA)

Eliza (b.ca. 1794 SC)

John (b.ca.1797 SC; d.ca. 1840 Pulaski Co., GA)

James (b.ca. 1799 SC; d.ca. 1826 GA)

Richard (b.1802 SC;d.ca 1852 GA)

possibly Larkin W.

Barbara may have been William's wife. Larkin W. may have been William's nephew (especially if this is the William Deshazo who is named as one of the two executors of the estate of Lewis Deshazo, who died in 1818 Eatonton, GA). He is never found involved with William's other sons again during their lives which were lived out in Pulaki and Twiggs counties of Georgia.

William Deshazo/Deshaso is shown being granted 530 acres of land in North Carolina as a result of an honary discharge from the Military (presently unit unknown). He is shown on 1780 and 1782 property tax records kept by the registrar of deeds in Granville Co., NC. He does not appear on the 1785 or later tax records kept by the registrar of deeds in Granville Co., NC.

By 1795 William is shown in Edgefield Deed book 16 purchasing land. The deed is signed by both William and what looks like a Barbara Deshazo. William Deshazo appears on the 1800 census in Edgefield, SC. The census indicates that William was born between the years of 1755 and 1774. Since both this William and a Lewis Deshazo are shown near Robert; he is very likely the brother of Lewis/Louis, son of Robert and "Mollie" Deshazo (also in Edgefield, SC). He may even be the William Deshazo who married Nancy Parrish in 1779 Granville County, North Carolina. Robert Deshazo had previously been in early Granville County, NC. The ages of the children on the census in Wiliam's home indicate that he certainly may be the father of Robert (b.1792) and another son (b.ca.1797). He is established as the father of Richard Deshazo down in 1826 Marion, Twiggs County, GA on store account records. Richard pays accounts two times for "William Deshazo, father".

In 1809, 1810 and 1811, William and Robert Deshazo appear on Pulaski Co., GA land tax digests kept by the Pulaski Superior Court. Adjoining land owner for William is Mr. Horn. 1811-1821 Pulaski County, Georgia court records show entries for William Deshazo, John Deshazo, and Robert Deshazo. These men were involved as jurors, in court cases, and John as a constable in 1812, and William as a commissioner twice. There are several entries for William Deshazo (as many as 3 in 1 year). In 1818, William is shown on the Twiggs Co., GA tax digest along with two Robert Deshazos (one is supposed to be his father, Robert) and a Jonothan Deshazo. If one of these Robert's were a son (as I suggest), he would be about 26 years old (b.ca.1792). If Jonothan/John were the other son (as shown on the 1800 SC census), he would be at least 21 years old. Upon studying maps and land records, I have surmised that is is very probable that these men did not move, but may have been listed in different counties as a result of county boundries having been moved.

By 1821, John Deshazo is shown in Pulaski Co. as the Administrator for the will of Martin B. Horne, deceased. He is no longer shown paying land tax in Twiggs Co., GA. In 1822, William purchased 202 acres from a Roger Lawson in Monroe Co. William must have died late in 1826. The 1826 Twiggs County land tax digest shows William paying taxes on 405 acres in Twiggs Co., and 202 acres in Monroe Co. The 1827 GA Land Lottery shows the Orphans of Wm. Deshazo having a ticket for land in Troup Co.,GA. This would indicate that William Deshazo died between the years 1826 and 1827 either in Twiggs or Monroe counties of GA. John Deshazo is shown over in Houston Co., GA purchasing property in 1827. On the deed, a Robert and Richard Deshazo (brothers) are shown as Witnesses. The same Twiggs land tax digest shows Richard Deshazo as Admin. of Est. for William Deshazo in 1830. He is shown on 202 acres (that probably belonged to his father, as the adjoining property owner is the same); "Walker" (Larkin "W"?) is shown being granted 200 acres in Monroe Co. (lot 208, district 7); and Eliza is shown being granted 202 acres in Troup Co. with Richard listed as her guardian. Robert is shown on 202 acres in Twiggs Co. (probably the land he paid taxes on on the 1818 and 1826 land tax digest). I believe that the last 202 acres that had belonged to William may have been sold so that John could purchase the land in Houston Co. This accounts for all of land that had belonged to William (on the 1826 land tax record). Due to the lack of records for the Twiggs Co., GA area, I have yet to discover a record of sale for the land that John Deshazo likely inherited and sold before it appeared on the land tax record of Twiggs Co., GA under the administration of Richard Deshazo. By the 1833 land tax digest, Richard has 272 acres (possibly part of that last 202 acres); Larkin W. has 202 acres (in Monroe Co.); Eliza would probably been married, her land would probably be listed under her husband's name; and John was over in Houston Co. In August of 1837, Richard and Robert are shown as executors of the will of William Deshazo, selling land that belonged to William. This happens to be the same lot that Larkin had been on (lot 208 in dist. 7).

It is very thought provoking to consider the way that these sons of William Deshazo were found on records. Although Robert is obviously the eldest, he does not appear to be the "leader" of the group. Instead, Richard appears to be the business oriented son (despite his position as the youngest). John seems to have been very ambitious purchasing and selling land in Houston, Chatham, and McIntosh counties before he settled in a possible law practice back in Pulaski county, GA.

John Deshazo is shown in 1830 selling land that he purchased in 1826 over in Houston Co. By 1836, he is shown paying tax on personal land in 1836 Pulaski Co., GA valued at $180.00. He evidently had a business partner, George Brainard, that was an attorney. This would lead one to wonder is John himself had pursued a career in the legal field. He is also shown from 1836 as "Deshazo and Brainard" paying taxes on a separate lot of land and 2 negro slaves valued at $1500.00. A notice posted in 1840 in two seperate newspapers (The GA Journal and The Savannah Times) list the death of a John Deshazo (b.ca. 1795). He died in 1840 leaving Mr. Brainard as Executor of his estate. There are 26 pages of filmed record of the dispertion of his estate by Mr. Brainard. In this estate record, Robert and Richard Deshazo of Twiggs Co., GA are specifically mentioned as administrators of the estates of William Deshazo and James Deshazo. Evidently their estates were still tied up in court settlements over in Twiggs Co., GA. Also mentioned specifically is Mr. Crawford Hart, who helped Mr. Brainard on this account. The estate record also clearly shows John Deshazo's widow as Susan. According to family records of William Shipp, John married his daughter, Sarah Ellen "Susan" Shipp. William Shipp also lists his daughter, Susan Deshazo in his will. The estate record shows that they had a daughter named Mary Ann Deshazo, but lists no other children or heirs.

Robert Deshazo stayed in Twiggs Co. through the 1840 and 1850 census recordings appearing to have had at least two sons and two daughters. One of the sons I believe may be my John (b.ca. 1815) who married Mahaly Willoughby over in Houston Co., GA in July of 1833 (J.P. was John Herrington - possibly grandfather to Nancy who married William Deshazo in 1860 - below). Something must have happened to John between July of 1833 and August of 1834. His wife, Mahaly/Mahala is shown marrying a Richard Smith in nearby Bibb Co. Their only son, Aaron is shown on the 1850 census of Mahala's older brother, Solomon Willoughby along with three half-siblings, Richard, John and Elizabeth Smith. The second was William Deshazo (b.ca. 1824 - as shown on census records). He appears on the 1860 census in Pulaski Co., GA near his only living son, William Deshazo (shown as a mechanic). William married first a Sarah M. Blount in 1853 Pulaski Co., GA . I don't know if she died or they divorced, but he married Nancy Herrington in 1860 in Pulaski Co., GA. Robert, William's father must have died between 1860 and 1864. William dies in 1965, and his estate record (on file in Pulaski Co., GA) shows dispersion of assets of much greater value than he had in 1860. He likely inherited as sole heir when his father died. The estate record of William Deshazo shows Nancy Deshazo and Johua Herrington (her father) as executors. Joshua is also shown as guardian of minor, John Be------ Deshazo. John must have been the only son of Nancy and William. Nancy remarried a George Bell and is shown in Texas in 1880 with her son and father Joshua Herrington enumerated in the home of her husband.

Eliza Deshazo married Crawford Hart. She is shown on the Pulaski county census records in his home in 1850 and 1860. Crawford helped administer John Deshazo's estate in 1840. He is also specifically shown in the 1852 will of her youngest brother, Richard Deshazo's will as "my good friend and executor, Crawford Hart". Crawford's parents were Marmaduke Hart and Mourning Collum. His sister Elizabeth married Theophilus Sauls, whose son, Kinchen married Richard Deshazo's daughter, Susan in 1853. The Hart line also married into the Herrington line.

Richard Deshazo is shown on the 1830,1840, and 1850 census records in Twiggs Co., GA. He is mentioned as an administrator for the Estate of a Barbara Deshazo. Many children appear in his home on the 1840 census. It's possible that some of these children were those of the Rosa Deshazo (possibly widow of James Deshazo) shown on the 1830 Twiggs Co., GA census near both Robert and Richard. On the 1850 census, his two daughters and his second wife, Mary are listed in his home. Richard Deshazo served on several official city positions during his life in Twiggs county. He dies in Twiggs Co. in 1853. His will was on file in Pulaski Co. and can be viewed from the main DESHAZO ANCESTORS web page, under WILLS. His daughter, Susan married Kinchen Sauls (nephew Richard's sister, Eliza). They are on the 1860 Twiggs Co., GA census with Susan's sister, Eliza living in their home.

It is still my suspicion that Larkin W. was the son of Lewis Deshazo (d.1818 Eatonton, GA). William may have taken him into his care. The reason for this is not known. Perhaps he was a 'favorite' nephew, or maybe William just wanted to ease the burden of the eldest orphaned son, William King Deshazo. In any case, it appears that this Larkin moved on to Alabama and then eventually down in to Mississippi.

NOTE: All these Deshazo's are very likely related. PLEASE keep in mind that the above information is a result of my own research, based on documents that I have found. There are still MANY "loop holes"! Alot of hands and time are needed to research these areas to try and uncover more documents that will shed evidences of certainty on the lives of these folks.
