One of the saddest sights for me is that of a thin, feral cat or homeless dog. It makes me wish I could afford to adopt every one I see and disappoints me in my fellow humans. These animals suffer every type of pain, disease, anguish, fear and distress imaginable and many of us pass them by with hardly a second look.

I've had many pets in my life and after sharing my home with them I know they are capable of emotions. I've seen them display love, affection, fear, joy, sadness and almost every other type of emotion that we do. So I know these little lost strays are miserable beyond belief.

Who created the domestic cat and dog? We did. They didn't ask to exist on this earth. We took wild creatures, able to care for themselves, and created domestic versions which need our help in order to live for our own pleasure. That's why I feel it is our responsibility to see to it that they all have a place to belong.

Please, if you have a cat or dog that is allowed to roam, have it neutered so that no more unwanted babies are brought into this world. Neutering is very affordable and helps prevent major health problems later on. It also helps prevent undesirable behavioral problems in males. Male cats especially usually do not spray if neutered at a young age and lose their desire to fight other males. This can result in fewer trips to the veterinarian to treat wounds and infections.

If it is at all possible, and it often is, please keep your animals inside or at least in a fenced in yard. You really do find out what a wonderful creature your pet is when you share your house with it. Most outside pets unfortunately end up spending very little time with their owners. So much precious time with a unique and charming animal whose life is all too short is lost that way.

And lastly, (for now) I beg you, if you don't already have a pet, please consider adopting the next hungry little stray that stops by your home. Or visit your local Humane Society and save a little furry friend from a horrible death in a gas chamber. I've always thought the Humane Society has failed in their advertisements by stopping short of showing graphic pictures of just what happens to the animals that don't get adopted. If you'd ever seen it, and had any love whatsoever for cats or dogs, you'd be out of your chair and on your way to rescue a sweet, innocent little creature whose only crime is existing.

Believe me, you'll be repaid a thousand fold for your trouble by a grateful kitty or doggy that will love you for the rest of its life.
