THE SPECTATOR

(June 21, 1986, page33)

...You come to see stars playing leading roles and it must be said that both Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Dalton are well worth watching... But the play really belongs to Timothy Dalton's excellent Petruchio. There is not a trace of the demented sadist we have encountered in recent years. Dalton acts the assumed character of the mad-cap railer with complete presence of mind, with conscious theatricality and without a particle of ill humour.
