Citizen Kane
(1941)
A cinematic masterpiece chronicling the life and times of newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane (based loosely on the real life William Randolph Hearst) played superbly by Orson Welles who also directed, produced, and helped to write the film. The story is told originatively through several different viewpoints as the various people who knew Kane recollect their memories of him. Stunning usage of lighting and makeup are excellent as is the innovative cinematography and direction. The virtually then unknown cast are all wonderful in their parts. This was the movie debut of many of the actors in this film including Welles, Joseph Cotten, and Agnes Moorehead. An absolute must see, as fresh now as it was then. Voted the American Film Institute's number one film of the past one hundred years. |
