Here Comes the Navy

(1934)

James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, and Frank McHugh in Here Comes the Navy (1934)

1/2

An entertaining war comedy/drama about a man, Chesty O'Connor (Cagney), who after getting in a scrap with a Navy Chief Petty Officer (O'Brien) and loosing to him not only the fight but also his girlfriend, joins the Navy seeking revenge. Once in the Navy he falls in love with the Chief's sister and this only worsens relations between them. Chesty makes a good sailor, but his animosity toward the Chief and toward the Navy makes him miserable. Good acting all around by the leads. The movie is lightened up by the humerous antics of Frank McHugh as "Droopy" Mullins, Chesty's friend. It received a best picture Academy Award nomination for 1934. Historically notable for the filming done on board the U.S.S. Arizona, which was to go down in flames at Pearl Harbor just a few years later.
