Michael Is Dad's "Biggest Fan""

HOLLYWOOD -- DADDY DEAREST: Michael Douglas has had his share of problems (including alcoholism) but his father - Hollywood veteran Kirk Douglas - isn't one of them.

"I'm probably his biggest fan," the 50-year-old Michael says in reverential terms of his 78-year-old father. "I don't feel that he's gotten just respect in terms of what he has accomplished and done in the span of his career."

Consequently, Michael was delighted when his father was given a lifetime achievement award at Washington's Kennedy Center in December, although Douglas and others were upstaged by recipient Aretha Franklin. "I'm very proud of him for getting this honor. He's made some wonderful pictures."

Michael names some favorites: "Champion (1949) personified the image of him gritting the teeth, that kind of strength he had; Paths Of Glory (1958) was good; Lust For Life (1956) made a lasting impression on my brother and I as we ran out of the theatre screaming when he cut his ear off (as Vincent Van Gogh) because we had gotten so absorbed in the picture; Lonely Are The Brave (1962) was a lovely change of tune for him.

"I've done 25 pictures (including the current corporate thriller Disclosure) and he's done close to 80. I'm very happy that he's also had this new career as a novelist. He's working on his fifth novel. I think it's saved him from doing a lot of bad pictures." As a producer, Michael is planning a project for the two of them to do together.

"Each year that I'm involved in this whole strange mixture of art and commerce, I have more and more respect for what he's done. He has an amazing presence. His inner strength - you can feel it - along with this tenacity and his concentration level and his intensity. He's VERY INTENSE!"
