Choosing A Therapist Con't

Various Categories Of Therapists:

- counselor/therapist
- psychologists
-social worker
- psychiatric nurse
- pastoral counselor
- marital and family therapy
-psychiatrist
- psychoanalyst

There are various types of counseling including one on one or in a
group.

Other Considerations:

- consider what you are able to pay (many are covered in the
Province of Alberta, check your area.)
- get referrals 9 you are a consumer of services and have the
right to shop around.) Ask others who have received
services.
- interview therapists - keep in mind your needs or goals and quaality
of a councilor. Your feelings are important. Feel comfortable
with the therapist.
- what you feel is probably right. Trust your own thoughts and
feelings.

As A Consumer You Have The Right To:

- ask questions at anytime
- be informed of the therapists qualifications
- confidentiality ( except in legal issues )
- be informed of taping of interviews
- know fees and method of payment
- suggest own goals
- a second opinion
- openness and honesty by the therapist
- be treated with dignity
- terminate therapy any time

Your Responsibility:

- priorize therapy if you've made that decision
- attend regularly and on time
- pay agreed fees
- be honest and open
- follow through on mutually agrred commitment with your
therapist
- you can be a part of ongoing evaluation
- if you wish to discontinue, the final decision is yours

counselor and a client is never acceptable and is never the
client's fault. If such a situation arises, it is important that you
tell some one.*
