There are some simple ways to help yourself slow
down or stop
symptoms while you are feeling stressed, or trying to keep an
even keel. They may not solve the underlying problem, but they
may provide some relief.
1. Get help while you still can: the longer you wait, the harder
it gets. Depression is very dangerous. medications may take
from four to six weeks to work, so it is best to get help early.
2. One of the best exercises to work on, is stopping your
negative thoughts.
3. Plan you day with some activities you have to do and some
activities you enjoy. Give yourself permission to care for
yourself. (This may be tough, as I know it can be, but try )
4. REMEMBER that depression passes. Focus on living one day
at a time.
5. Get emotional support from a family member, friend, or
other people you can speak with ( people that can relate. )
get involved in a fun activity with someone you enjoy.
Cuddle with a pet or a stuffed one. ( There are also many
chat places on the internet, such as Mirc, chat rooms etc..
try and find some, they can be very useful, as I have tried
them. )
6. Talk to someone!!!! If you need to find a distress line in your
area or resources like that. ( There is one in the Edmonton
Area, check your phone book ) It's OK to talk about your
feelings.
7. Listen to or help someone else.
8. Use whatever spiritual resources you are comfortable with.
9. Get some exercise, whatever you can muster - walk, run,
bike, swim etc...
10. Get out in the sunlight as much as possible. If you must be
inside, sit or work near a window.
11. Read a funny or light book, or watch a funny video. Listen
to ( uplifting ) music that you enjoy.
12. get dressed, put something on that makes you feel good.
