large egg yolks
1 1/2 tablespoons
artificial sweetener

cup half and
half -- scalded
1
teaspoon vanilla
In a bowl, beat together the
egg yolks and sugar until the mixture is light and forms a ribbon when
the beaters are lifted.
Add the half and half in a stream while stirring then transfer to a heavy
saucepan
and cook over moderately low
heat until the mixture thickens. Do not boil. Remove the pan
from the
stove and stir in the vanilla.
Strain the custard through a sieve into a metal bowl set in a bowl of ice,
and let it cool,
stirring occasionally.
Chill covered.
Serve over fresh berries.
