There was an experiment in several college classrooms regarding the equipment that is used by some typists or transcriptionists.
There is a special glove that is produced to help people prevent or reduce the effects of carpal tunnel syndrome and other aches and pains in the hand and fingers and wrists.
One of these gloves was brought into several different college classrooms that had either only men or only women. It was very interesting to note the differences among the groups. The glove was brand new and it was still in its display box. The display box had a round hole in it and above it was printed "Touch me" by the manufacturer so the people in the store would feel what the glove felt like.
In the mens' classes the teacher described what the glove did and the men accepted it and went on.
In the womens' classes the women wanted to see the glove. They asked if the box could be passed around. They did touch it where it said "Touch me". The commented on the color of the glove and wanted to know if it came in different colors. In one of the womens' classes several women asked if they could remove the glove from the box and see what it's like. They did and then they tried on the glvoe. They wanted to see what it felt like, asked if it came in different sizes as well, and described how it felt on them.
This gender difference is all the more interesting when we consider that the classes were related to issues of computers.
In the computer classes the men usually experiment with things. They usually do not just accept what the teacher says but they try it out and then they try other options as well to see if it works in various other situations. They experiment. They want to get a hands-on concept of it.
On the other hand in computer classes, according to this teacher's experience, the women were much more accepting and they just wanted to know what button to push on in order to accomplish a given result. They did not want to experiment.
Thus, the experiment showed there are opposites in the way people think.
Whereas the men were more inquisitive and were more ready to experiment with the computer, they were less inquisitive and less ready to experiment with the glove.
The women, on the other hand, were more inquisitive with the glove, and they wanted to experiment with it more and the men were much less interested. They were just interested in knowing that such a glove existed and that's it.
