Sometimes called "heritage languages."
True bilinguals should be able to switch from reading or speaking one language to the other easily, and with no preference. They should be equally interested in picking up a book in either language, and they should be able to read either one at the appropriate grade level for their age.
Does this mean that bilinguals are gifted? Well, their parents will certainly say that they are. However, an objective reseacher is just as likely to say that they are normal children who have had the advantage of being raised as bilinguals - and that fact caused an increase in their intelligence.
