There were many attempts to present the local language as the "best" or most correct language for locals. These programs met with varying degrees of success.

• An English-only movement developed some time ago in the United States. It was a response to issues raised by immigration, social problems in some areas of the country, and unemployment among immigrant groups
• The French movement in Canada was promoted by those who were faithful to France
• The רק עברית (Only Hebrew) movement in Israel grew less strong over the years, as people began to understand the benefits of bilingualism and multilingualism

In all of these cases, people gradually began to understand the value of a bilingual upbringing.
