Research seems to imply that bilinguals are more intelligent than their monolingual peers. There are various possible reasons for this finding:

For our purposes, the debate is irrelevant. The fact that there is a perceived and noticeable improvement in intelligence is enough for us to believe that it is beneficial. Let the researchers evaluate the reason for it, or whether it should be called something other than intelligence.
