So long, so long, so extralong: Mercedes S-Class as state carriage. It measures
6.16m, has all luxury onboard.

Translation of an article from German daily newspaper "Bild", November 12th 1999

Pullman, the state carriage from Mercedes
Finest leather, multimedia technique and lots of space thanks to one metre more length. Mercedes presents the S-Class as  state carriage Pullman.
The 6.16m long luxury car is one of the few vehicles in which one would like to travel in the rear. Because the extension of one metre fully is of benefit to the rear passengers.
They sit vis-à-vis, can stretch out their legs with great relish. Soft leather and noble burred walnut root lend club-athmosphere to the interior. Of course a separate air condition and a modern audio-system are installed.
The list of options contains so pleasant details like intercom system for communication with the driver, bar with cooled compartment for drinks and glasses, mutimedia-consoles, TV, car phone, fax. The prices for these have not been fixed yet.

However, the glass partition between front and rear compartment, which can be operated electrically, comes as standard.
The space for the driver is much more modest than for the noble passengers. In return he ((the driver)) may steer the heavy battleship. And that is a lot of fun, because the Stuttgarters equip the Pullman either with a 306hp strong 5.0-litre eight-cylinder engine or with a 367hp  strong 5.8-litre twelve-cylinder.
The price for the S500 Pullman is DM 350.000 ((USD 184.000 assumed USD 1 = DM 1.90)). As standard with air suspension, electronic stability programme ESP five-speed automatic transmission and light alloy rims.
With the new Pullman the Stuttgarters continue a 70-year tradition as manufacturer of representative limousines. The first Mercedes Pullman was the model Nuerburg from ((the year)) 1929.

The name ((Pullman)) comes from the American factory owner George Mortimer Pullman from Chicago who in the middle of the 19th century made a name for manufacturing particularly luxuriously equipped railway coaches.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman:
New representative limousine with luxurious space and most modern technique

- Wheelbase of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class extended by one metre
- Spacious rear with seats in Vis-à-vis-arrangement
- Multimedia-technique in combination with finest materials

Stuttgart - On the base of the successful S-Class Mercedes-Benz has developed a new top-model for very special occasions: The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman.

With that the Stuttgart car marque continues its tradition of more than 70 years as manufacturer of representative limousines. The new model, which celebrates its world-premiere at the beginning of November 1999, combines most innovative automobilistic technique with utmost comfort and luxury. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman is available with eight- or twelve-cylinder engine and excels by a wheelbase extended by one metre compared to the long wheelbase version. The additional space is of benefit to the rear passengers, who can make theirselves comfortable on a Vis-à-vis seat arrangement.
The foot space between the two seat rows in the rear measures impressive 70 centimetres in length - that is roughly 20 centimetres more than with the Pullman-model on the base of the S-Class predecessor (model line W140). The rear row of seats comes with electrically adjustable outer seats as standard or with two electrically adjustable single seats as an option so the new representative limousine gives space for six or seven passengers altogether. The most important body- and chassis-data of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman at one glance:

Width 1855 1855

Pullman: Historic synonym for highest comfort on wheels
Already the supplementary designation Pullman points to the noble character of the new representative limousine: The American factory owner George Mortimer Pullman from Chicago (US state of Illinois) in
the middle of the 19th century made a name for manufacturing particularly luxuriously equipped railway coaches. Since then he counts as a byword for highest comfort on wheels - the standard work „Kraftfahrer und Kraftfahrzeug“ ((Motorist and motor vehicle)) defined the Pullman-limousine already in 1928 as "big, comfortable travel- and representation vehicle with partition between driver's seat and passenger compartment". The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman meets this description into the smallest detail and at the same time sets new standards for comfort and security thanks to innovative technique. Not only the separate air-condition and the modern audio-system for the rear, but also the six standard side-bags in the doors and in the interior trim of the middle body parts take care for that. Together with the window-bags for the rear, the electrically adjustable headrests and the three-point automatic seat-belts on all seats they form a perfect passenger protection-system.
The glass partition between the front and rear compartments of the cabin can be operated electrically as  well as the fabric curtains which as an option guard the complete rear against sunrays or curious looks.

Whilst the driver of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman profits from all standard innovations like COMAND, navigation system, multifunction steering-wheel, electrically adjustable seat with lordose support, parameter steering or Xenon-headlights (S600), Mercedes customers can equip the rear of the new S-Class Pullman limousine fully to their personal request. That applies not only for the choice of materials and the colour scheme, but also for the technique, which makes the stay on board of the representation limousine even more pleasant and eventful. Amongst others one can choose these individual options for the rear:
- Intercom system for communication with the driver
- Bar with cooled compartment for drinks and glasses
- Multimedia-consoles with two monitors
- DVD-Player
- TV-Receiver
- Working tables
- Car phone and telefax device
- Hi-Fi-Soundsystem
- Second rear space air condition
- Additional lights

Base: Enhanced body in white and modified chassis
A side line slightly raised in the middle and rear area, newly designed side protection strips and a newly developed roof form the harmonic appearance of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman, which reflects all formal personality of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class – despite extended wheelbase and higher roof.
Besides numerous reinforcements of the body in white the engineers developed a new three-piece propeller shaft, an extended exhaust system and reinforced chassis components for the representation limousine. The new side middle pieces of the body are constructed as doors which can be opened in the garage easily. This eases the service personnel working at the technical systems in the rear of the limousine.
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman has a legal maximum total weight of 2800 kilogrammes and thus - despite the extensive standard trim of the rear - is only roughly 400 kilogrammes heavier than the base model S500 in the long wheelbase version.

Technique: V8- or V12-engine as a choice, air suspension as standard
Depending on the customer's request under the hood of the representation limousine works the 225kW/306PS ((DIN))  strong V8-engine of the S500 or the highly modern twelve-cylinder engine of the S600, which delivers 270kW/367PS ((DIN)). The automatic cylinder shut-off which comes as standard with the twelve-cylinder can be ordered as an option for the S500 Pullmann. The most important engine data at one glance:
W220 S500 Pullman S600 Pullman
Cylinders/arrangement 8/V 12/V
Valves per cylinder 3 3
Displacement 4966 ccm 5786 ccm
Power Output 225 kW/306 PS 270 kW/367 PS
Maximum Torque 460Nm at 2700-4250 revs/min 530NM at 4250 revs/min

As standard both model variants of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman drive off the production line with the air suspension AIRmatic, the electronic stability programme ESP, with five-speed automatic transmission and light alloy rims of the dimension 8 J x 18.
Mercedes-Benz has developed the S500 Pullman and S600 Pullman in co-operation with Mercedes-AMG GmbH. That concerns an integral production concept which takes into consideration all relevant aspects already at the construction. Thus it is ensured the fundamental advantages (corrosion protection, body stiffness, production quality) can be exhausted fully compared to a classic retrofit. The manufacture-like small series production at the DaimlerChrysler-plant Sindelfingen ((Stuttgart, Germany)) thus guarantees the high mercedes-typical quality standard of the limousines.

Personal comment by MBEP webmaster:
It definitely is outrageous from DaimlerChrysler that the buyers of the S500 Pullman have to pay extra money for Xenon headlights - that's extremely shabby to the buyers of a DM 350.000+ car!
Note that the DaimlerChrysler press text always refers to the cars as "Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman":
That gives space to the speculation that the Maybach ((W240)) will not only come in standard (5.73m) and long (6.16m) version ((V240)), but also as Pullman. So far that's pure speculation only but it's hard to imagine that besides a Maybach an S-Class based Pullman shall play the role of the top-representative car which will be used in many countries around the world as state carriage.
