Oxford Buses in Exile

last updated September 2nd 1998 - 1700hrs

This page takes a look at former Oxford buses now giving further service elsewhere. Your contributions are welcome - if you have any news, sightings or photos of any former Oxford bus, please email them to me.

A list of former COMS buses still in existence is available here but don't expect it to be complete! Please send us your sightings to help us keep it up to date.

We start with some of the Stagecoach Oxford Volvo Olympians which went north to Manchester in exchange for Volvo B6s.

Former Stagecoach Oxford 502 is now 732 in the Stagecoach Manchester fleet. The batch's home depot is Hyde Road, and this is the location for this photo of 732.

Stagecoach Manchester 735 (formerly Stagecoach Oxford 505) is seen at Piccadilly Gardens in this view, having just arrived on a 182.

Other buses, other areas !

Chester & an ex Oxford Bus VR.

Photo by David Woodhouse - who has an excellent bus page as well.

Until recently Devaway operated in the Chester area and their fleet included some ex Oxford Bus Bristol VR's. They were recently taken over by Arriva (Crosville) and we are not sure as yet what has happened to the VR's. Pictured above is ex 502, KJO502W.

CRANLEIGH near Guildford - an ex Stagecoach Oxford Tiger.

A batch of four Leyland Tigers with Plaxton Derwent bus bodies were acquired by Thames Transit prior to their take over by Stagecoach. These fine buses left the fleet sometime ago now and are now providing good service to Tillingbourne, a private company based in Cranleigh, near Guildford. F282HOD is seen above.

Hodthorpe, Nottinghamshire - an ex Oxford Series 2 VR.

This former COMS Series 2 Bristol VR, JWL 993N, is now operating in north Notts for Johnson's of Hodthorpe along with sister JWL 997N. This bus was numbered 440 in the Oxford fleet and was from the last batch of Series 2's. Northern Bus, Anston near Sheffield

Now operating for Northern Bus in Sheffield is VR YBW 603R. As the NBC standard double decker, Bristol VRs formed a large part of the fleet during the late 1970s and 1980's, with later examples being dual-doored. However, COMS had the distinction of being the only bus-operating NBC subsidiary not to purchase the group's standard single decker, the Leyland National. (Photo by David Root)

A former Citylink coach, EBW 105Y is also now in the fleet of Northern Bus. It is a Duple-bodied Leyland Tiger, and is seen laying over at Sheffield Interchange. It was one of a batch of ten, two of which later passed to the Oxford Tube via South Midland. (Photo by David Root)
