Translated excerpts from an article from German car mag "Auto Bild", end of Aug. 2000 written by Michael Specht

...More space offers a new derivative of the successful A-Class: A variant lengthened by 15 centimetres which probably will be named A160L. Room which exclusively will be for the benefit of the rear passengers. Because since the start of the A-Class in autumn 1997 its constructors and the board of management got coarse scolding that there's no real reason for the total length of only 3.57 metres as also ((Volkswagen)) Golf and ((Opel/Vauxhall)) Astra already are significantly over 4 metres ((Golf: 4.149m, Astra 4.110m)). German car magazine "Auto/Strassenverkehr" reports in an article from the end of September 2000:
The long-wheelbase version will be on sale in Germany from the mid of 2001 on. The wheelbase will be 15 cm lengthened, the extra space fully for the benefit of the rear passengers. The production of the present A-Class variant with "normal" wheelbase will continue.
The all-new A-Class will have its debut at the IAA 2003.
