Mercedes-Benz C 32 AMG: supreme high-torque performance from supercharged six-cylinder power plant
· Dynamic supercharged performance: 3.2-liter V6
produces 260kW/354hp
· Unrivalled torque: 450-newton-meter maximum
outclasses the competition
· Big on fun, frugal on fuel: just 11,3 liters
of premium unleaded per 100 km
· Future: AMG committed to high-performance supercharged
engines
Stuttgart – Following the extremely successful launch
of the new C-Class, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is proud to present the top model
of the new range, the C 32 AMG. The exceptional qualities of this compact
sports sedan, which will arrive in the showrooms in spring 2001, are reflected
in its impressive technical credentials: equipped with a compressor-type
supercharger, the 3.2-liter V6 engine generates 260 kW/354 hp while its
remarkable maximum torque of 450 newton meters outclasses every other series
production car in this segment, demonstrating, once again, that Mercedes-AMG
GmbH is second to none when it comes to developing outstanding high-performance
automobiles.
"The new C 32 AMG represents a logical progression
in our highly successful model strategy. We have created the sportiest
C-Class ever in order to offer our demanding clients a state-of-the-art
sports sedan which provides a truly engaging driving experience. With its
powerful yet decidedly eco-friendly supercharged engine, it turns every
mile into an unashamed celebration of dynamic driving pleasure," says Dr.
Wolfgang Bernhard, Head of the managerial board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "As
far as the direct competition is concerned, the C 32 AMG will be the benchmark
for some time to come. But the AMG version of the new C-Class is only the
beginning: Mercedes-AMG GmbH will be providing even more striking examples
of its expertise with high-performance supercharged engines in the future."

Success story: AMG has produced some 9000 C-Class sports
sedans
The C 32 AMG replaces the successful eight-cylinder
C 43 AMG and C 55 AMG models, of which a total of 4200 were made. Together
with the C 36 AMG, the very first model built entirely by AMG, a total
of some 9000 sports versions of the C-Class rolled out of the production
facilities in Affalterbach and Bremen between 1994 and May 2000.
The C 32 AMG has everything it takes to continue
this success story. Mercedes-AMG GmbH expects to see strong demand for
the new model in all its core markets and aims to build about 3500 models
each year.
New benchmark: high torque from an exceptionally eco-friendly
engine
The C 32 AMG opens up a new dimension of high-torque
performance. The maximum torque of 450 newton meters which is achieved
at 4400 rpm clearly sets the new V6 supercharged engine apart from all
current competitors in the medium sports segment. But the peak torque is
only part of the story: the torque band of the supercharged six-cylinder
engine is equally impressive. Over 400 newton meters of torque are available
at just 2300 rpm and remain on tap right up to the rated speed of 6100
rpm, giving the car truly outstanding dynamic potential. The C 32 AMG accelerates
to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and has a maximum speed of 250 km/h (electronically
limited).
Needless to say, the C 32 AMG also lives up to
Mercedes-AMG's high environmental standards. With NEDC combined fuel consumption
of just 11,3 liters of premium unleaded (95 RON) per 100 km, this high-power
sedan clearly demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile sporty performance
with environmental responsibility - something which is also underlined
by the fact that the new C 32 AMG already complies with the particularly
demanding EU 4 standard which comes into force in 2005.

Transmission and chassis: state-of-the-art perfection
The Mercedes-Benz C 32 AMG delivers its formidable
power via a five-speed automatic transmission with tip selector. Specially
enhanced shift points (courtesy of the Mercedes-AMG engineers) make for
faster selection in all speed ranges.
The specially retuned chassis provides sporty
handling with a high level of comfort. Major differences compared with
the suspension set-up on the C 320 include retuned spring-damper units
all round and a body which is approximately 30 mm lower at the front and
rear axles. Precise road contact is taken care of by 17-inch AMG light
alloy wheels (7.5 inches wide at the front and 8.5 inches wide at the rear).
The new C 32 AMG features 225/45 R 17 tires at the front and 245/40 R 17
rubber at the rear, while the newly developed AMG braking system is always
ready to deliver the necessary stopping power with its 345 x 30 mm internally
ventilated perforated disk brakes at the front and 300 x 22 mm internally
ventilated disk brakes at the rear. Driving safety is enhanced still further
thanks to ABS, ESP®, ASR and the Brake Assist system.
Design and interior: the ultimate combination of exclusivity and driving comfort

The striking AMG styling features a number of visual
cues which clearly link the new Mercedes-Benz C 32 AMG with all the other
high-performance automobiles produced by Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The powerful
sweep of the front air dam with its integral fog lights, the special side-skirt
panels and the muscular rear apron leave no doubt as to the dynamic qualities
of this sporty new top-of-the-range
C-Class model. The harmony of the overall effect is completed
by the distinctive rear muffler with the characteristic AMG "dual oval"
chrome tailpipe which also produces an unmistakably sporty engine sound.
The striking exterior is complemented by the exclusive,
stylish interior with its superb appointments: these include the special
AMG instrument cluster with a speedometer calibrated up to 300 km/h, an
ergonomically optimized AMG sports steering wheel in leather and AMG sports
seats (upholstered in exclusive nappa leather as standard) which are specially
shaped to provide optimum lateral support.
Additional info from an article from German car magazine
"Auto
Motor und Sport", issue 16/2000 written by Thomas Fischer:
The unlimited top speed is 284km/h ((176mph)). The price will be roughly DM 112.000,-- (USD 53.000 assumed USD 1= DM 2.10, that is twice the German price of a C200 Kompressor; prices include German VAT at 16 percent). Date of introduction of the car will be May 2001 as latest. In autumn 2001 the C32 will also be available as T-Model (station wagon). The C32's weight ready for driving is 70kg higher than the C320's. AMG CEO Wolfgang Bernhard said: "In the future there will be an AMG-version directly at the same time a new Mercedes series starts". AMS adds that Bernhard is really mad about the fact that tuners like Brabus, Carlsson and Lorinser were quicker and offer conversions already now, whilst the C32 AMG will be available nine months later only and explained why the C32 is not ready earlier: "The go for the C32 could be given at the beginning of 1999 only and then began the race against time". AMS adds that the engine had to be modified far-reaching under the condition to meet the strict quality demands of Mercedes which includes the notorious long-term runs as well as summer- and winter-tests.
