This other picture in the baby photo of this years chickens. We purchased 50 cornish-cross males. They did real well. Sarah placed third and I placed fourth at the county fair out of 15 pens of chickens. They would have placed higher, but we forgot
ask dad how much they weighed. The morning of the judging, dad was there as they weighed all of the chickens. The judge estimated that the first and fourth place pens weighed more than ours. Latter in the week, during the animal auction, the phample
listed the information of all the animals being auctioned. It was there that we learned our birds weighed a couple of pounds more apiece per bird then the first and second place pens, plus, our birds were three weeks younger than the first, second, fifth, sixth, and seventh place pens.
It must have been all the attention Amber gave them. Amber and James were major helpers of mine during the summer when I fed the chickens. Each and every day Amber would go in the chicken house and hug as many chickens as possible. Surpringly, the chickens took it quit well and never did fight back.
But the chickens has no reason to. The live as kings at our place. Their chicken duplex was built just 10 years ago by dad. It panneling on the inside walls. Its main door is like the door found on many homes, and there are three sun window. During
he warm days there is an outside walkway for the chickens that is elevated off of the ground and even has a tin roof for shade. Most of the warm days we would find most of the chickens out side lying in the breeze or drinking from the automatic watter
at provided fresh cool watter around the clock. But the lazzy chickens usually just hung around inside the chicken deplex, lying or standing under the large rotating box fan, and just lazily eating their grourmate feed and drinking the watter that was
filled with vitamins and minerals. But don’t get us wrong. The last thing we wanted was fat birds, so every day Amber would help me chase the birds around the chicken house and usually make them do about five laps around it. Also to keep them supper white
they got fresh straw daily.
And I must give credit to Sarah. She is terrified of chickens, and doesn’t like touching them, even during judgeing. But if it were not for Sarah getting over her fear, the chickens would not have made it. I was gone during most of the month of June
en we had the chickens, and she did the chores for me then.
Thank you Sarah!
Onto more 4-H pictures.
