Char li estas unu el la grandaj poetoj, ne sole de Francio, sed de la mondo; ne nur de la dekkvina jarcento, sed de chiuj tempoj.

Char legi liajn versojn ne estas ia timinda erudiciula ekzercajho, sed ghuo kaj plezuro - se nur oni povas legi ilin en simple honesta traduko, ne vualita per la nuboj de akademia historiismo, en lingvajho nuntempa, sed emulanta (jen misuzo de komputilo- termino: funkcie paralelanta) lian eksterordinaran mastradon de lingvo kiel la ilo de poeto.

Bedaurinde ghuste France-parolantoj senighis je tiu plezuro, post kiam oni en lernejo prezentis lin al ili kvazau prahistorian fosilion... (Kiel Angle- parolantoj lernis ne ghui la shercojn en Shakespeare, por ne mencii Chaucer...)

Kiu ja trovis tian tradukon (kiaj ekzistas en Germana kaj Nederlanda, en Slovaka, Hungara kaj Japana, kaj nun en Esperanto, sed lau mia scio - krom iuj fragmentoj - ne en Franca au Angla*), renkontas verkiston / prezentiston, kian ankau nun oni povas trovi en Europaj kabaretoj: profunde senteman kaj homaman poeton, foje ech romantikan (sed ne kiel en Romantikismo), sed ankau socie konscian kanzoniston (tiuj de la jardekoj 1930 kaj 1960 agnoskis lin tia - kaj pruntis de li!) kaj - en multaj el liaj okversoj - brilan podian rapidsherciston (akran, sagacan, sed sen la vulgareco de iuj modernaj usonaj!).

Kaj - fine, sed firme - char la "Parizo" de GeoCities estas ekzakte la trafa loko en Ciberio por chi tiu vere Pariza poeto el Parizo, Francio, Europo.

Because he is one of the great poets, not only of France, but of the world; not just of the fifteenth century, but of all times.

Because reading his verse is not the scholarly exercise one might fear, but fun and pleasure - if only one can read them in a straightforward translation, not clouded by academic historicism, in today's idiom, but emulating (to misuse a computer term) his extraordinary mastery over language as a poet's tool.

It is a pity that of all people those speaking French are deprived of that pleasure, having had him presented in school like a prehistoric fossil... (As those speaking English have learnt not to enjoy the fun in Shakespeare, not to mention Chaucer...)

Who has found such a translation (as exist in German and Dutch, in Slovak, Hungarian and Japanese, and now in Esperanto, but as far as I know - apart from a few fragments - not in French or English*), meets a writer / performer as one still now may encounter in a European cabaret: a profoundly sensitive and caring poet, even a romantic one (but not as in Romanticism), but also a socially aware chansonnier (those of the 1930's and 1960's recognised him as such - and borrowed from him!) and - in many of his octets - a brilliant stand-up comedian (sharp, to-the-point, but without the vulgarity of some modern ones!).

And - last but not least - because GeoCities' "Paris" is exactly the right spot in Cyberspace for this true Parisian poet from Paris, France, Europe.
