Giacomo Puccini 's

LA BOHEME

Henry Murger's autobiographical novel ' La vie de Boheme ', which was serialised in a French periodical,  was the inspiration for Puccini's opera. At least one other character from 'La vie de Boheme' also published his memoirs ~ that being Alexander Schanne, who became the character 'Schaunard'.
'La Vie de Boheme' is a comical series of related incidents. Almost every chapter contains an episode or reference that Puccini used in his opera, but strangely , the opera's central situation ~ Rodolfo's affair with Mimi and her death ~ is based on "Francine's Muff", a chapter that is not about Murger's main characters, but is a separate little story about a seamstress named Francine and a sculptor by the name of Jaques.
Puccini also chose to change some of the characters personalities for his opera. For instance, in the book Mimi is cold and calculating and Musetta is the gay, warmhearted coquette.
Less than 30 years after it's Metropolitan Opera premiere, La Boheme rana close second to Aida as the most often performed opera at that house, and certainly one of the most loved opera's in the world.
