At the Beginning
Anya hurried over to the still body of Dimitri. With a heavy heart, she gently stroked his hair.
Suddenly, he groaned!
"Dimitri!" Anya gasped.
"Ouch!" said Dimitri. Then he slowly rose to his feet and smiled. "I know, I know. All men are babies."
They moved closer together.
Anya spoke first. "I thought you were going to St. Peters---"
"I was..." Dimitri replied.
"You didn't take the money," Anya said.
"I couldn't," Dimitri admitted. "Because... I ... I" he stuttered.
But Anya knew what he was trying to say. They leaned forward, closed their eyes... and Pooka started barking. The two parted to find the playful puppy wagging his tail, with An'a crown in his mouth.
Dimitri sighed in resignation. "They're waiting for you," he sad sadly as he handed his princess her crown.
In the palace, Marie and Sophie sat in a small room. Marie picked up Anastasia's crown and a small note. Sophie stared at the note, and tears streamed down her plump face. But they were tears of joy. "They've eloped... isn't it romantic? It's a perfect ending...."
"No, it's a perfect beginning.."
Both Anya and Dimitri had found what they were looking for -- home, love and family in each other.
The old woman smiled a bittersweet smile as she gazed out the window.
She knew Anya and Dimitri were out there, somewhere, beneath the starry night sky.
Anya has chosen wisely, Marie thought. And so has her young man.
They knew that the greatest treasure -- the one more precious than rubles or golden crowns -- was love.
The End!
