USS LST 120 / Republic of Korea LST Munsan
Online Library of Selected Images:-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS - DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER-- WASHINGTON NAVY YARD -- WASHINGTON DC LST-120 was sold to the Military Government of Korea in February 1947. She appears to be the ship that, operating under the name Munsan, was lost by stranding in September 1950.

Background details of LST 361 provided by Paul Harris, whose uncle Hubert Hause served on the 361.
LST 383 was laid down on 16 June 1942 at the Newports News Shipbuilding & Drylock Co.; launched on 28 September 1942; and commissioned on 27 October 1942. She was transferred to the United Kingdom on 20 November 1944. She was transferred an again to the Netherlands East Indies Maritime Customs as a sale on 10 June 1946. Written by Les Sheen, a former Electrician aboard the 383 in the Royal Navy. Mr. Sheen has obviously done his homework and this site deserves a visit.

Interviews with Patsy J. Giacchi of Hackensack, New Jersey and Angelo Crapanzano of Cliffside Park, N.J. Both of these men survived the sinking of the USS LST 507 on April 28, 1944 during Operation Tiger at Slapton Sands, England. Five hundred and fifty one embarked Army Soldiers and one hundred and ninety eight Sailors, aboard the USS LST 507 and the USS LST-531, which were lost, and the USS LST-289 which was severely damaged, perished in this attack.

The USS Sumter received its name from the city and county of Sumter, South Carolina. She is the third ship in the fleet to bear the name Sumter, "The Gamecock City", is located in Sumter County, South Carolina. As of 11 March 1997 the USS Sumter LST-1181 was leased to Taiwan and has been given the name of Chung Ping.
