The Memories of Destroyer Gwin
Live in the hearts of all her men
Who live today and still recall
Our fallen comrades one and all
Ones thoughts go back to '41
The year the great war had begun
The year when she was put afloat
Dreams of victories were not remote
A mighty crew would man her guns
And praise her for her battles won
Two hundred fifty men would be
Like brothers from a country free
On quiet nites when all was still
Each man would dream of : Rocks and Rills
The land they loved so far away
But very near in dreams today
They shared the bitter and the sweet
Were even glorious in defeat
Sustained each salvo one by one
And every man stood by his gun
When finally the mortal blow
Destroyed her proud seams below
In vain refused to yield to fate
But time ran out its now too late.
In spite of damage too much to tell
Each man alive stood proud as hell
Proud he could say that he had been
Part of the crew of the mighty Gwin
As years go by the crew grows thin
Each time they meet time and again
And when the last man hears the call
They'll all join hands in hallowed halls.
