Little America in Tokyo

Here are some of the people and places of our Little America in the middle of Tokyo.  Those years were some of the most intense of our lives.  We knew the friendships would only last a few years, because we were all military brats, and we had to make the most out of them.  Being in high school in Tokyo had special significance to us because, deep down, we knew we would disperse around the globe and wouldn't see those pals for 30 or 40 years, if ever again.  Maybe that's why we were so crazy!  It sure was fun!

Nicola's Pizza House was located in a very interesting place   (click on photo to see large view).  Because of its proximity to a certain Embassy, it was rumored to be a nest of spies.  Naturally, we had to frequent the joint for just that reason (see Page 13 for a reader story).

So, Sam Phillips, you have this new Sun Records label that you'd like The Continentals to record for? Geez!  Do you have any experience?

And, then ... the Americans began to leave .. it started as a trickle .. and turned into a torrent.  Our government had agreed to turn back more and more American bases and housing to the Japanese government.  There was a huge event coming to Tokyo that would require every bit of space they could obtain to build new stadiums and new housing for:

Washington Heights became an Olympic athletic stadium, which is still there.
The rest of Wash Heights became a huge park.  More about that later.

It was a bittersweet memory to walk through that park, and try to remember where the Teen Club was, where you lived, where the pool and the BX were.

Two years ago, the Canadian circus, Cirque du Soleil, was in residence at the park.  Kids were running everywhere as I sat on a wall, looking out over the park .. dredging up old memories .. and wishing I hadn't quit smoking .. because I really wanted a cigarette then .. to remember walking out of the Teen Club with my friends to have one.
