Dedicated to Grumps, and all lighthouse lovers. Hope you enjoy.

The first lighthouse for which a detailed account remains was the great Pharos of Alexandria, considered one of the SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD. A stone structure about 350 ft. high with a wood fire at the top. The Pharos, (built c.280 BC) took its name from the island on which it was built.

Among noteworthy medival lighthouses were two on the commercially important Tyrrhenian Sea, the famous Lanterna of Genoa (built 1161) and the slightly later tower on the island of Meloria. Rebuilt in 1544, the Lanterna still stands today.
The incandescent lamp came into use in the 1920's and is still standard lighthouse equipment today. An acetylene gas burner was invented in 1906 by Nills Gustav Dalén of Sweden, capable of automatic control, is still the normal illumination for unmanned lighthouses.
