About a year after Cosmo had come into our lives, we decided it was time to have another. I thought Cosmo's attitude was because she (who I still thought was a he) was lonely. My Best Friend, Darlene, Has bunches of Lories. One of which we both fell in love with, Melody. You can visit Melody and her family at HTTP://www.oocities.org/Petsburgh/4885 So we began our hunt for a little baby Black Cap Lory. Without mentioning any names, we became very frustrated with a few breeders we found. One was willing to give us an unweaned baby without caring that neither of us had any experience with handfeeding. This breeder's attitude was something to the nature of "Oh, I'll give you a quick lesson ?." We turned to our friend's at Birds of the World again, and once again - Brenda came through for us. She found us a little baby (not the one mentioned above) and we were able to watch her grow while visiting the store. When ready we brought this little Angel girl home. Our friends on Loryworld, who listened as we whined about our experiences and read patiently as we described Gabby in every detail while watching her grow and get weaned, threw us a little baby shower. Gabby is an interesting one, to say the least. She sleeps upside down, she eats everything in sight, and she talks up a storm. Jason has said to me when she's quiet, to watch what I say because she has her recorder on. And how true he was. She has even learned to call the puppies and get them into trouble for being too near the cages. There's no way to count the number of words in her vocabulary, as she learns something new everyday. We also found out while visiting her at her "nursery" that she is a sibling of Melody. See, good things do happen when you're patient. The lessons learned while looking for a Black Cap were that there are many, many people out there who just push and push their breeders to no limits. Choose you breeder carefully. While I don't recommend buying birds from Chain Stores, we're fortunate in that we have a store like BOTW, where the owners pick and choose their breeders very carefully. Please, please reconsider buying from a fly-by-night breeder or store. The chances of getting a diseased bird are just too great to risk! |
