Rabbit Diet and Digestion

Rabbits should be fed good quality pellets, fresh hay (alfalfa or timothy), fresh water, and fresh vegetables. Anything other than that is considered a treat and should be administered in limited quantities unless otherwise recommended by a veterinarian experienced with exotic animals.

A rabbit's pellet should be high in fiber (18% minimum or more) and should not be purchased in more than 6 weeks' quantity at a time as they may spoil or become inhabited by other animals such as mice.

Fresh hay is also important in a rabbit's diet. Hay is essential to a rabbit's diet as it provides good roughage. Roughage reduces the danger of hairballs and other types of blockage. Another good source of roughage is apple twigs. Timothy hay is better for rabbits to eat than alfalfa hay. This is because rabbits need to eat a variety of things. Alfalfa is the main ingredient in rabbit pellets, and feeding alfalfa and pellets is extremely redundant and can cause a rabbit to become fat. Oat hay is hard for rabbits to digest, as is any kind of oat or wheat and is therefore not recommended to feed to rabbits. Straw should not be the only hay source for your rabbit, but it makes a great toy!

Vegetables are extremely important in a rabbit's diet. When shopping for rabbit vegetables, look for a wide variety. Both dark, leafy vegetables and root vegetables are important. Look for different colors, and stay away from beans and rhubarb. Vegetables should be thoroughly washed to remove dirt and insects.

If you feed your rabbit a lower amount of pellets than what is noted here, you must replace the nutritional value without the calories. Increasing the amount of vegetables fed does this. Also, a variety of hay must be encouraged all day long, which is done by offering fresh hay and straw a couple of times a day. See your veterinarian if you think that you should do this for your rabbit.

Rabbits must eat at all times of the day; therefore, you must always have hay, water, and vegetables available. There is no maximum amount of vegetables that should be fed. If your rabbit eats all of his pellets for the day, do not feed more. Instead, feed more vegetables. Many veterinarians will say to fast your rabbit before surgery. This is not a good idea, and you should tell your veterinarian why. If rabbits do not eat constantly, their digestive system will not work properly. Rabbits are incapable of vomiting, which is why hairballs are a problem.
