Since the dawn of creation man has been fascinated with names. Down through the centuries names and titles have been assigned to the angels, but do the angels actually need a name? Any name gives distinction to the bearer. The angels, as partners of God in the spiritual realm, however, have no need for distinction. Their identify rests in God their creator, and they know where their place is within the divine plan of God. To distinguish themselves by a name would be to place themselves more within the human plane of existence.
There are several reasons why people feel the need to name their angel. Many people feel that their angel has or needs to have a name to fulfill its role as an angel within the human world. Some have named their angel in order to feel closer to that angelic presence. For others it appears that a name signified ownership and then only a specific angel will do their bidding. Still others cling to the belief that angels are the spirits of deceased relatives and thus assume their familiar human names.
Again, it must be stressed that each of these beliefs are human based and in some ways distort the true existence of angels. The role of an angel is distinct in that it must glorify God in all that it does. Its placement, whether in heaven or upon the earth, is determined by God and does not require a name. Our identification with an angel is not channeled through name association but through the spiritual avenue of prayer. We should always be in prayer in all things and thus our spiritual connection with the angels is reinforced through our prayer connection.
Everything within the creation of God is directed by God. Nothing is owned by anyone either here or within God's kingdom, so angels cannot be possessed by us. Again, angels are our eternal partners, not our possessions. Our deceased relatives are part of God's eternal kingdom, but they are not angels. People do not become angels when they die so therefore, they do not serve in that capacity. Angels and people are separate creations and are defined as such within God's kingdom. I do believe that our loved ones are aware of our early existence and they love and share with us, but they are not angels.
I know that regardless of where I am within my earthly journey that I am never alone. For today and always I pray that each of us will walk closer to God and experience the wonderful partnership of the angels.
