Food idiosyncrasies are defined as an abnormal response to a food substance or additive. The reactions generally do not involve the immune system and they are often seen in people who are genetically predisposed. |

Examples of food idiosyncrasies: |
|
|
|
LACTOSE INTOLERANCE - abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea. |
|
|
|
FRUCTOSE CONTAINING FOODS - abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). |
|
|
|
CHOLINE AND CARNITINE CONTAINING FOODS - fishy odor of body secretions. |
|
|
|
RED WINE - sneezing, headache, diarrhea, itchy skin, shortness of breath. |
|
|
|
ASPARAGUS - sulfur smelling urine. |
|
|
|
BEETS - red urine. |
|
|
|
CHOCOLATE - migrane headaches. |
|
|
|
FAVA BEANS - hemolysis (breakage of red blood cells), fatigue, nausea, fever, chills, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath. |
