What The Eagle Means To American Indians
The eagle represents courage and bravery. We American
Indians believe that they are the ones closest to the
creator,The Great Spirit. The feathers of the eagle are
honored by Indians as having powerful medicine, and that
Eagle Medicine is the power of The Great Spirit, the spirit
of tenacity.
Eagle
Sacred Messenger of the Creator
According to our elders the will of the Creator placed us here on this great Turtle island which is now called North America. We, the original Indigenous people, fondly refer to this beautiful land of plenty as our Mother, the Earth.
Since time immemorial we have maintained a peaceful
coexistence with creation in a harmonious state of balance for we are related to all things.
All life exists as an expression of the Creator's love. The greatest teaching and medicine in the world is love. To the Indigenous people, Eagle symbolizes the power of the Creator's love. The Creator gave Eagle the special purpose of looking, after and protecting Indigenous people.
The Eagle teaches us the love the Creator has for us. Through this relationship with Eagle we communicate with the Creator by listening to the spiritual voice of Eagle. Eagle has many important teachings. Through him the knowledge of the Creator is channeled to unite the people.
The Spirit of Eagle instructed the Indigenous people to express love for our Mother Earth by respecting women, who like Mother Earth, are the sacred rivers of life.
Eagles mate for life for they are faithful and loyal. The two winds represent male and female, with the tail feathers representing balance and direction. Together they symbolize the blessings of the Creator's love that brings forth harmony in relationships, then perpetuates life into the world. The winds are perfectly balanced to create a beautiful, graceful and powerful flight. This strength enables Eagle to attain great heights and fly closer and closer to the mystery of the Creator. In this manner Eagle has the power of vision and he can see clearly what is happening among human beings.
We believe Eagle listens to our prayers in the sacred ceremonies. His purpose is to be the intercessor between the Creator and the Indigenous people. Man's voice is not worthy enough to directly address the Creator so Eagle carries our prayers and speaks to the Creator on our behalf. When he circles over the people it means that the Creator is sending his blessings.
Eagle teaches us to sincerely love all life because the Creator exists in all forms of life. Eagle has as the power to heal the sicknesses of mind, body and spirit.
We as Indigenous people, believe in the powers of Eagle to bring forth faith and spiritual life. To wave an Eagle wing fan means to wish all people peace and happiness. The down that comes from near Eagle's heart has the power of Gentleness.
We use his sacred feathers in ceremonies because they remind us of the Creator. The middle shaft of the feather represents the path of life to the Creator. The strands of the feather represent the many temptations that can take a person off the road. There is always a larger side of the feather which means goodness will always overcome evil. The right to wear an eagle feather is a great honor and is only achieved after performing, a great deed of courage.
He also teaches us the courage to act in love, to think from the heart, and to love one another. He teaches us to live our lives in honesty and uphold the truth by walking a spiritual - path. that leads to the Creator.
The white head of Eagle symbolizes pure goodness and wisdom. This is why our elders, who have seen many years, have white hair and are very respected. Eagle is very proud to work for the Creator: his eyes are the eyes of the Creator here on Mother Earth and show great determination to be true and obedient to the Creator's laws.
Increasingly, elders are hearing the warning cries of Eagle telling us the sacredness of Mother Earth is not being respected.
Eagle is speaking through the Indigenous people to warn humanity that the Great Laws of the Creator are being violated and forgotten. He is saying human beings must relate to this precious creation in a manner of respect.
The Creator blessed life with the mutual freedom to exist according to his love. We, the Eagle people who were placed on Turtle island, were given a special purpose of sharing the wisdom of Eagle with our brothers and sisters. For to love Mother Earth is to honor our Creator.
We, the messengers, were blessed by the Eagle spirit with the mandate to extend this important message which is a warning in every sense. We were also given the right to impart some of the Indigenous knowledge of the natural environment in a manner of sharing for the benefit of all.
Our valued relationship with the Eagle is only one aspect of the sacred Circle of Life, but is very significant in terms of prophecy fulfillment and the respect we hold for him.
The Voice of the Eagle represents all forms of life, whose very existence is threatened by the current environmental crises that have arisen from Man's outrageous and senseless exploitation of Mother Earth.
