Introduction

Your Casio E-100 color Palm-size PC or HP Jornada 680 HPC Pro device might look pretty cool in the office or airport lounge, but would they really cut it on the construction site or in the hospital treatment room?

In our exclusive new Industrial Handhelds Buyer's Guide, we're highlighting a new generation of rugged and tablet Windows CE Palm-size and Handheld PC devices designed for a wide variety of specialized industrial applications, ranging from data collection and decision support applications in healthcare to remote wireless order entry and table booking in the hotel and restaurant business.

We hope that you enjoy reading Windows CE Business Solutions Industrial Handhelds Buyers' Guide!

Industrial Handheld Overview

What is an Industrial Handheld?
For the purposes of this guide we have defined Industrial Handhelds as Windows CE Palm-size, Handheld, and Tablet devices that have been designed for specialized industrial applications rather than general business use. We have divided these into the following three categories:

Ruggedized Windows CE Palm-size Devices
As their name implies, ruggedized Windows CE Palm-size devices are tough, lightweight devices that share many of the features of the standard Palm-size PC form factor, including a touch screen, and stylus input. The main difference is that they've been ruggedized in order to withstand the rigors of industrial environments, such as high temperatures and four-foot drops on to hard surfaces. They also come with additional features such as an integrated WAN chip for wireless data transmission to a central server and a 12-key keypad for fast data input.

Currently there are two ruggedized Windows CE Palm-size devices on the market, the UltraPad 2700 from Ameranth, and the Norand 602 Series from Intermec Technologies. Please check out our Ruggedized Windows CE Palm-size Devices Pictures and Comparison Charts below for further details.
